help with 953 serial issue

Bought a 953 havent picked it up yet guy claims its a 953 hes 75 and bought it from original owner many years ago. The serial is 41745 it has fan gear steering??

Toro master parts viewer also show 1963 953 has can gear steering ive been told diffrent by a member please help?

If I remember correctly the first 1963 953's made were assembled with the Ross steering; however, the demand for these exceeded the production of the Ross style steering wheel, so to meet demand Wheel Horse switched to the 1054 style steering. I do not know what date this happened nor do I know the serial # that it switched at, Mark.

Yes the 953 can have the fan gear steering, just means it's a later one like was said above, the 953 had a few changes from the first to the last, steering gears, steering wheels, headlights, and I think oil bath to paper air cleaners

My 1054A has an oil bath air cleaner that i'm quite certain is original. So oil bath may not be the best way to gauge if its an early or late 953.

I said I think on the oil bath, some may have been swapped to paper style over the years, making it easier to service

Maybe now thos will be easier to fine if this truly a 953 it serail comes up as a 953 please help?

Help with what?  You were given the answer.  Yes, a 953 can commonly be found with fan gear steering... just means it's a later 63 production.

 

I'd be more curious why whoever restored it put the grill decal on sideways! 

 

It's a very nice tractor by the way... very sharp!     I like the chair leg footie on the PTO shaft... nice protection idea!
