856 going back together.....question about a few parts.

Recommended Posts

Mr. 856

So im finally getting around to putting the 856 back together. Is it common for the manual to show parts that may or may not have been used on your tractor? Below I will explain why im asking this. If anyone has the answer please chime in.

I couldn't put my hands on items # 28, 34, & 35 shown in this diagram so I ordered them. Now im ready to put the steering back together I seem to have run into an issue. One being it shows all three parts on the diagram however the bushing if put on the steering shaft would then cover the hole for the cotter pin. The other problem is the washer/shim #34 & 35 wont fit around the bushing. What am I missing here? Do I just use the washer and shim and cotter pin and call it good? they bushing will fit the shaft.......but is to long. part ordered per part # shown in this manual and still an available part. any ideas?

The brass bushing is pressed into the cast steering support - you probably already have one in there.

Shims are added in front of the cotter pin to take up the slack and pull the fan gear into the correct mesh with the steering shaft gear.  More or less shims are used to get the correct mesh - minimal play but not too tight that it binds (normally at the ends of its travel where it has the least wear).
