tomtractor 71 #1 Posted September 12, 2013 I have a Kohler k321 which only runs on full choke. Obviously this isn't correct. What should I do to correct the problem? There is a new fuel pump and the carb. has been cleaned.
Martin 2,133 #2 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) you are not getting enough gas through the carb. 99% of the time the carb hasnt been cleaned well enough. ( there is cleaned and then there is properly cleaned)...... i suspect your high speed needle is blocked partially or more. make sure all the holes in the high speed needle are clear.... did you adjust the high and low speed needles correctly? 3 turns out from bottomed in is a good starting point ( more than what the manual says) for the high speed. since you are starving for gas try that first before touching anything else. high speed needle is the one that goes vertical into the carb from the top middle of the carb right next to and parallel with the throttle shaft. other possible causes are dirty fuel bowl, partially blocked needle and seat, weak fuel pump. there has been countless posts and threads on this subject outlining possible causes for this condition. Wheel-N-It 2,976 #3 Posted September 12, 2013 Martin hit the nail pretty much square on the head. However there is the chance you may have a Carter carb which has the high speed adjuster located on the flywheel side of the carb just above where the bowl marries up to the body. Or, you could possibly have a later model EPA carb on it which has no high speed adjustment. There is a low speed adjustment but it will do no good to move that screw one way or the other. Jdslednut 1 #4 Posted September 13, 2013 How worn is your throttle shaft? A worn shaft can pull air into the engine with the need to compensate with more fuel. Thus, you need to choke it to equalize.
tomtractor 71 #5 Posted September 13, 2013 This weekend I will try Martin's suggestions. Thanks you all as always.
953 nut 60,325 #6 Posted September 13, 2013 You can give the down and dirty method a try first. Get a can of Seafoam Carb Cleaner spray and remove the high and low speed needles, spray some in the openings and then adjust them as Martin said. Then take off the fuel line and float bowl, remove the float and needle and spray in both directions through the seat and fuel line. Put them back togather and give it another try. May also want to spray a few shots in the carb. while it is running. This method has worked wonders for me and I hope it will help you too.
tomtractor 71 #7 Posted September 14, 2013 On a unrelated note - can you still get a new Kohler k321replacement motor? And if you can what color would it be. Grey by any chance? I have a tractor with the motor painted primer grey.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #8 Posted September 15, 2013 On a unrelated note - can you still get a new Kohler k321replacement motor? And if you can what color would it be. Grey by any chance? I have a tractor with the motor painted primer grey. Probably but they are few and far between. I missed out on a NOS M16 last year. Boy, I would have loved to had that one put back for a future project.
