What should be inside the double pulley of a 36" mower deck

Recommended Posts

Butch

I pulled the pulley off. There is a sleeve in the bottom pulley. There is a lot of slop and play with that sleave on the spindle shaft. There is nothing in the top pulley. I don't even know what the nut was supposed to be tightening down.

'To make matters worse, the pulley wobbled around so much that it wore down one of those 4 bolt heads that hold the spindle to the deck. The pulley even wore a groove into the deck.   The top bearing is exposed and some

steel balls are missing.

1. Can I get the spindle shaft and bearings out without removing the spindle from the deck?

2. Should that sleave in the pulley have been tight on the shaft?

3. Is there anything else inside that pulley?

4. If the shaft can come out does it come out the bottom or top of the deck?

5. What is holding it in?

Thanks guys.

I see the shafts goes out through the bottom. I've been banging and banging with a long socket on the shaft and it will not go through the last couple of inches.

What model deck are you working on?

05-36MS01 I think. No plate on the deck. It's from a Blackhood. But the shafts are different. There is no Key on the shaft or pulley so that number deck is probably wrong. That manual is an 81 manual for the deck.

I did get the snap ring out which freed up the shaft to get it out. It looks like the shaft is shot. But the pulley gets me. There is a sleeve for the bottom pulley and not the top. There is a ton of slop between the pulley and shaft.

Don't know if both are worn are not. I know the pulley is $85 and so is the shaft plus the bearings.

It might be model number  05-37SC01 which is from a 300 Series.

I'm seeing a blade spacer and  spindle cup on the bottom, but nothing on the top after the seal. I'm guessing its just all worn out. If you cant get it a part you may need a housing

This is what Im looking at

05-36MR01 & 05-36MS01

Does your pulley press on, or bolt. Im seeing a spacer on

89 100674% Spacer - Pulley (5-0601 & 5-0711) 3

90 100675% Ass'y - Sealed Spindle Bearings

 5-7366

I don't think it was pressed on. Lots of play/slop between pulley and the shaft. The shaft had a nut on it but I don't think it was holding the pulley on. The nut wasn't down low enough to hold it.

Butch, I'm sure you looked in manuals already, but there are metric bearing assy's and 3/4" shaft assy's. The metric starts out with nut on shaft 5/8", may or may not be followed by lock washer, then a keyless pulley, may or may not have spacer washer, oring over shaft to keep lube spillage minimal. Shaft has a spacer tube between top and bottom metric bearings that will not see till remove bearings or move it aside with something. Bottom bearing should be snap ring retained. Shaft should be fairly removable through bottom with pressure or a little extra force from topside with care to protect  threads.

The standard 3/4" shaft is nearly same with exception of pulley and shaft being keyed, seal at top over bearing bearing with a visible bushing between pulley bottom and going down through seal. It too has the tube between bearings and as already mentioned both have the bushing and cup at bottom.

You may find a mixture of both types depending on previous maintenance parts available, don't know if common but had a set (3) like that.

Now if is not the 05, 95, series on down to 75, and 65 you'd run into a double d shaft at blade end and either bolt or double d at pulley end.

The manual 05-36mr0? ipl shows both side and rear discharge models and this .pdf shows breakdown and application/usage of maybe all drop through spindles that are belt to blade shaft driven, gear driven not listed.

What a great manual for the spindles. Where do you guys find this stuff?

I believe Garry gwest_ca comes up with the majority of manuals, but there are lots of contributors and I thank them all. Really some great info. Wish I could fig out how to input some!

Her is pic of 107439 pulley (center double)(will have to double check as believe 3/4" bore)  Toro parts 05-36ms01 part # 6, don't have a separate photo of shaft (in manuals assy F)(A is metric)

Groundhog mine looks like the one on the right if that has a recessed center. No keyway though. I think mine was just held on with a lock washer and nut. But

I can't figure what would stop the pulley from spinning on the spindle shaft. The shaft isn't square or anything. No keyway. I'm getting ready to go work on it

some more to see if I can figure things out. I think I have the "A" spindle from that spindle manual and there is a spindle on Ebay that I think is a match for

what I have.

Butch, all those are same just top and bott pics and they are keyed 3/4". In order to use them yo'd need two new bearings, shaft, top (bott) washer, bearing spacer, seal, bushing, nut, and key. The old housing is sometimes transitional with a deep bearing top allowing seal and bushing (lot of stuff and pricey).  The old snap ring, spindle cup, spacer, shaft nut (bott), and bott washer would transfer(bearing spacer(middle) to small and longer.

If all you need is the metris double pulley, rare on ebay for 36" , try vendor kelly on here and if he doesn't have one there's a place in New York that may have a good used one.

The opening of the double pulley looked worn and the opening measured 19mm.
