416-H (1990) , and Tiller questions

Just acquired a 1990 416-H (16hp Onan w 1200 hours) and 48" mow deck.

 

Going to look at a Tiller attachment, mounting looks a bit complicated for a newbie Wheel Horse owner.

 

Any advice or concerns about getting the right tiller?  Idler pulleys?  belts/springs?

Was looking at $1500 for a 3pt tiller for my Ford 1210.  But spent $800 of that on the W.H.   Maybe another $300 for a Tiller if I can catch up with the guy selling it.  Seem like a deal?

Lots of great infos on this web site.   I'm quite excited about this new yard toy, err, equipment.

Any advice on proper use/maintenance?  Best mowing speed/etc.?  What to do's what not to do's with this tractor.?   It is well used, but seems it has been maintained regularly.

 

Everything seems to work properly and it runs strong as far as I can tell.

If you haven't already, find the correct manual in the manuals section. Assuming you have the later style 36" tiller it's really pretty simple. One belt from your PTO to the tiller. You'll need the lift cable components if you don't already have them. If the tiller is an older style it uses 2 belts, an additional belt gaurd and requires moving the right side foot rest out. It's a pain. I had that type and modified it to use the single belt and didn't require moving the foot rest. Basically an older style tiller with a newer style drive. The older style lift utilized the rear slot hitch rather than the cable going directly on the tiller. I just checked and the manuals for both are available. I like my setup better because it make attaching/removal easier and by doing the pully diameter math the tine speed was increased a little. 

 

Tilling ground speed is pretty much dictated by the soil. Most of my tilling was in low range, For mowing I use 2 high unless the grass/weeds were really thick. With your hydro you'll quickly find the right speed for the task.

 

Just good common sense as far as the maintenance goes. Your manual will spell out everything for you.

By the way, 'toy' is just fine.

Here is the illustrated parts list for the tiller sold for your tractor in 1990.

It shows what you need to end up with.

The tillers are basically the same. It is the lift that changed over the years because the fuel tank was moved to under the rear seat pan.

Here is the operator manual for the 1992 model. Sorry don't have the 1990-91 manual.

Thanks all.  I'll review the manuals.   I will get the tiller model number this weekend, before I buy and do some research before I buy it.  I don't have it in me to rework the pedals so I'll probably not buy if it is an older model tiller.

 

As far as the lifting capability and lift cable, etc.  I don't see how that is supposed to hook up.  This one has the gas tank under the seat.

 

Oh, and no.  I do not have lift cable components.  I am afraid the lift components might be on the tractor the guy is selling with the tiller.  I'm just after the tiller.

Keep in mind Mithral, it's very easy to convert the older two belt drive setup to the newer single belt that doesn't require moving the foot reat.

Well, if the lift components are on the tractor that he is selling, bring a tiller manual with you to show him they are to go with the tiller. You can find the lift components, but they will cost you extra for no reason. You do want to look at the manual and make a list of ALL parts needed to make the tiller hook up and function as soon as you get it home and hooked up. Everything extra needed just brings the cost of the tiller up and it gets expensive Quickly!

Regarding the tractor with the fuel tank under the seat...that is fine, the small rockshaft needed will fit right between the two upright supports, the mounting holes already exist in them.

Update:

 

His tractor life assembly has a metal rod rather than a cable.  It doesn't look like it will work on my tractor.

 

His tractor is a mid 80's  with 8hp Kohler.  Tiller is probably about the same age.  My tractor is 1990.

 

VIN on the tiller is XX - 36TL01, the first two numbers have rubbed off his vin tag.

 

So he'd sell me the tractor and the tiller ... but what to do with my tractor ...  if I had the cash ...

I am not familiar with the newer tractors but from what I can tell on the parts diagram I think this should help explain how it works.

There are a few parts needed to run the tiller you will need. I'm not sure what you already have and what you will need. Some are needed for running the tiller and some for lifting the tiller. The first thing is the parts for the tiller. You will connect the tiller to hitch, mounted to, and located under the rear axle. The tiller will have a belt that will run foward from the tiller to an idler pulley and then around the PTO. That should be all you need to run the tiller.

You will also need a a way to lift and lower the tiller. Your lift assembly that lifts and lowers the mower deck also lifts and lowers the tiller. A manual lift will use a rod to lift the deck/tiller connected to the lift assembly. Yours should be hydraulic lift but still turning the same lift assembly. There is a cable that you will need to run from your lift assembly, thru a tube and to the rockshaft that is located under the seat. you will connect a chain from this shaft's arm to the tiller. This rockshaft is also used to lift and lower other attachments that mount on the clevis hitch.

Many have made their own rockshaft for under the seat and also made their own cables. Additionally, some have just put a pulley in place of the rock shaft and ran the cable directly to the tiller and they say theirs work just fine. Lots of threads on this site to give you ideas about both or you can contact members here or the classifieds for the parts you may need.

Figure out what you have already and then you can go from there.

With everyone's help and explanations I have a decent idea of what parts my tractor is missing.  Pretty much I have none of the parts at this point.

 

Spoke to the Tiller seller and told him what I need  to disassemble from his tractor in order to make the tiller work on mine.  He had no idea what all it required.

 

He is now rethinking selling his tiller if it requires me and him taking all the mounting and lifting hardware off his tractor.

 

So ... looks like I'm back to looking, but MUCH more informed.

 

He did offer to sell his tractor and tiller together, (his appears to be an early '80s  8hp Kohler or 8hp B/S)  I'm guessing it is a B-82, or something close to that.  But I would need to sell my 16hp 416-H to buy his. 

 

Hmm...  I'd rather keep the 416-H, but his 8hp tractor would serve my intended purpose just fine.  And his tractor is in better shape than mine. 

 

I do not believe he would trade tractors.  If I was him, I wouldn't trade.

Update:

 

In digging through adds, scrounging tractor/farm dealers, etc. I stumbled across a John Deere 450 tiller for my Ford 1210.   For $400 I couldn't pass it up.

 

So I no longer need a wheel horse tiller.
