Best primer prep

I'm in the process of restoring the metal on my newly purchased 520H.  I have sanded down the metal removing most of the rust and started the process of applying Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer.  Is it necessary to clean the primer before applying paint?  And if so, what would be the best cleaner to use (mineral spirits, isopropyl alcohol, dish soap, etc)

Follow the directions on the can of primer, or the directions given for the finish paint you are using.  RMP usually leaves a slight orange-peel surface so I would wet sand with 400 or 600 before finish paint.
