Machining a PTO bell

Recommended Posts

timo4352

I pulled off my PTO pulley , or bell, as I've seen it called here to check the clutch disk. It's not good. The clutch is down to the rivets and has cut into the surface of the bell a little bit. Has anyone had luck re-machining the surface to true it up? The front side where the brake shoe rides is about the same - with some rust to remove also before I install a new brake shoe. The cost of the replacement clutch disk is not too bad - about $60, but the bell is a different story.Too pricey. I've got a friend that has a brake lathe and I'm thinking he might be able to turn the bell/pulley for me.

Anybody had any luck doing this?

Thanks

Tim

KATO

Did mine on a regular lathe at work.... worked fine, just be absolutely sure its dial indicated true

and take off only the minimum. :handgestures-thumbupright:

I did the same thing Kato did, except my lathe was at home. Like said indicate it in first or you will just make the problem worst.

I somewhat doubt that turning the face is even necessary (unless it's REALLY bad).  If it were mine I would install the new disc and brake and be done with it.

I took the pulley over to my friends place after work today and twenty minutes later I had a freshly machined surface.

We only had to take .006" off to true it up. I'll get my parts ordered tomorrow and be back in business soon.

Thanks Walt :handgestures-thumbupright:
