starter generator question

does the generator have to be hooked up to the battery for the tractor to run?

I'm going to say no. But how are you going to start it? Pull rope? The other requirement is the (+) side of the coil needs battery voltage on the model 701 provided it still has battery ignition.

Well, base answer is no --- but you can get it to run if you can get power to the coil by some means other than the gen --- and then you have to start it some way!
