Dieselcowboy 210 #1 Posted August 15, 2013 Is a 520H suppose to free wheel down a hill when driving normally and not in neutral? My c160 and 16 autos do not do this. What would cause the 520 to do that? After it gets back to level ground it goes along like nothing happened.
Dieselcowboy 210 #2 Posted August 15, 2013 Does any one elses do this?
case442 132 #3 Posted August 15, 2013 Cowboy, My current 520 does the same thing, however it seems to catch up with it self in a short time and quits free wheeling. The last one I had did the same thing they were both 1990 models. My 92 didn't seem to do it from what I remember. Maybe they changed the rear some way or another. Take care Mike
Forest Road 594 #4 Posted August 15, 2013 My 314h doesn't do it. It's the same Eaton 1100 with 200 hours. I have a 522xi with a loader, also an Eaton 1100 pump, it doesn't freewheel either. Does it freewheel at all speed positions? Or just full forward?
dennist 139 #5 Posted August 15, 2013 I have never had one do it.
leeave96 490 #6 Posted August 15, 2013 Both of my 520H tractors do it. You round the top of a hill and the tractor feels like it is freewheeling for a foot or so and then the hydro catches up. I inquired about this years ago, because this ain't a problem with the Simplicity Sovereign type tractors or the IH Cub Cadets or newer tractors. I don't remember which forum (after all what you read on the internet is always true... ) that the Simplicity and IH Cub Cadets have either springs or internal circuits that maintain a balance on the hydro and keep the speed constant. With that, I was also told that Wheelhorse/Toro could have had optional internals added to the Eaton 1100 to prevent this, but chose not to do so - probably for $$$ reasons. I don't live on any flat land and so everything is lumpy, rolling and hilly. My hand controlled 520H tractors required constant attention to keep constant speed. My IH Cub Cadet, while I don't fully understand how it works, has some spring arrangement on the hydro that when working properly maintains the ground speed - even going up and down hill. The gear ratios on the IHCC are IMHO, much faster and further apart than on the gear drive Wheelhorses. 2nd gear on my IHCC is VERY fast for me and what I'm trimming and 1st is to slow. I can see where the IHCC gear drives did a nice job in setting up sales for hydros in that, with the IHCC, you can set the hydro speed and it will maintain the ground speed constant, up or down a hill, like a gear drive. BTW, the freewheeling down a hill and constant speed on my 520H tractors are no longer a problem since I put Matt's foot control kit on them. Thanks! Dieselcowboy 210 #7 Posted August 16, 2013 Seems like it's not a huge issue to worry with. Just wanted someone to make me feel better I guess. Thank you.
boovuc 1,090 #8 Posted August 16, 2013 Mine does the same thing and has since I got mine. It hasn't gotten worse or better. Just the same. I saw an earlier post about this issue and after reading it, it also made me feel better!
dcrage 630 #9 Posted August 16, 2013 My 418-A does this also -- I have been watching posts about this topic for the last year plus -- I have yet to see anybody give a declarative statement about the cause of this -- Am I correct in thinking that the Eatons are sealed units?? -- Seems to me that there has to be an internal leak somewhere that has to be statisfied before the oil pressure gets to where it needs to be to hold the tractor speed -- I will continue to watch these posts and it is good to know that my tractor isn't the only one doing this
OhioGregg 6 #10 Posted August 16, 2013 I have to say YES, my 520 will "free wheel" going down hill. While the ground around here is flat, so it isn't a problem or that noticable. The only time I really notice it is when mowing along our long driveway, which is sloped off on both sides. When you turn, pointing down hill, like when mowing around a catch basin, it will gain speed quickly, then resume after you turn to going level again. It would probably be a pain if in hilly terain.
