ignition timing is over advanced on kohler

Brian miller told me my ignition timing is over advanced. What does this mean?

If the engine is assembled correctly, the only way to change the ignition timing is by changing the points gap.

Do a search on setting "static timing". This will explain how to use the S mark on the flywheel and a light or meter to properly set the points.

 Normal timing is to fire the cylinder at top dead center just as the piston starts down. Advanced timing is to fire the cylinder just before the piston reaches top dead cylinder. You can get a little more power that way but it can cause hard starting and cause the engine to kick back when trying to start it. We used advanced timing on 5 HP Briggs go kart engines to get a little more power but when they kicked back when starting they would about jerk your arm out of joint.

Does it run? If not a sheared flywheel bey will cause an advance or retarded appearance in the timing hole on the K series but it shouldn't run or spark if too far either way. To check it's best to hand rotate watching point opening/closing and timing mark on flywheel. If the two are way off remove nut washer and flywheel as key will shear so as to appear still in groove (primarily to improper torque on flywheel nut).
