jcbelly 0 #1 Posted August 13, 2013 It seems as though too much gas is getting to the engine (?) The engine does not run steady, but kind of pulses. When I shut it off, it smells of gas and I have to let it sit for a few minutes before it will start again. Also, when I start it I barely need the choke at all. I'm new at this, and I have to admit I'm not really mechanical, so I'm trying to learn.
rmaynard 16,363 #2 Posted August 13, 2013 Sounds to me like the float valve is sticking. Time to take the carburetor off and check it out. It doesn't take a whole lot of skill to replace the float valve, and while it's apart, a good cleaning will make a world of difference. Just download the Kohler K-series manual from the manuals section, read about rebuilding the carburetor, and let us know the results.
SousaKerry 503 #3 Posted August 13, 2013 It would also help us to know what engine you are dealing with. Almost all small engine carburetors are about the same but each have their own quirks. If you don't know what engine you have give us the model number from the tractor, the best way to narrow it down is to give us the long model number on the builder tag usually located on the dash tower or under the seat depending on year. But I agree sounds like a float problem.
jcbelly 0 #4 Posted August 13, 2013 Thanks for your great responses. The model # I found was on the side of the dash tower. It reads 0391, although it could be 1 0391. Again, thanks for our help.
rmaynard 16,363 #5 Posted August 13, 2013 1-0391 is a C-100 with a Kohler K241. Should have a Carter #26 carburetor. Rebuild kit is Kohler part number 25 757 01-S
jcbelly 0 #6 Posted August 18, 2013 Got a rebuild kit, and am attempting to remove carb. How do I get the linkage to the choke off so I can remove it? I'm sure it's pretty obvious. I've been unable to find the right manual. Thanks.
jcbelly 0 #7 Posted August 19, 2013 okay....update. Got the carburetor off and wiped it down. Rather than an o-ring, there seemed to be some kind of combo o-ring/skirt around the unit. My o-ring wouldn't fit well, so I cleaned off the old one and reused it. Then I dropped in the small jet, cleaned off the float and tried to get the second jet out of the center with a screwdriver. It wouldn't budge. Frustrated, I just put it back together, started it, and it sounds great. Took it for a little spin and wasn't running rough. We'll see how it is for an extended period, but so far so good. Thanks for your help.
