psychocontractorguy 12 #1 Posted August 12, 2013 Hey guys, A week ago, I bought a Wheel Horse 312-8. The serial number seems to have faded from the sticker under the seat, so I haven't figured out how to give it an exact date yet. I found it on Craigslist, went and looked at it last Sunday after church, and the deal seemed too good to pass up. It had been garage kept, ran OK (more about that later), and came with a 42" SD deck, a 48" SD deck, a nearly brand new Toro Wheel Horse 48" "dozer" blade, new Toro seat, new battery, the original seat, tire chains, and several sets of new points/condensers/spark plugs. I paid $650 for the whole mess. It ran slightly rough, but had a new plug in it, so my first thought was a dirty carburetor, and I was right. The needle and seat were pretty clean, but the main jet was a mess. A little carb cleaner, some elbow grease, and about thirty minutes later, I was in business. Long story short, I'm hooked. I do have a couple of questions, though. Please pardon me if I'm asking things that have been discussed to death...just point me toward the correct thread and I'll read through that! 1. I have a Brinly-Hardy 12" moldboard plow w/coulter. It's just the "drag" type that connects via linch pin to the draw bar. Is there a better way to set this up? There is (seemingly) no way to lift the plow from the ground except by hand. Also, since it's a single-point setup, it tends to want to lay down on its side. Again, is there any other way to rig this? 2. Any good sources for original or repro literature on these tractors besides FleaBay? The manual section on this forum is GREAT, I'm just old-fashioned and enjoy having a "real" copy for my library. 3. What's the typical size of Ag tires that you use on these tractors? Thanks for your help!
Sparky-(Admin) 23,170 #3 Posted August 12, 2013 Typical AG tires are 23x8.50x12 or 23x10.5x12. Since your tractor came with points/condensor stuff it must have a K series Kohler and not the Magnum so it cant be newer than a 1986. In 1987 they switched to Kohler Magnum motors. Mike.......... Agage1 83 #4 Posted August 12, 2013 You need a clevis hitch for the moldboard. You ca n probably find one on eBay or you can make one.
BOWTIE 226 #5 Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) Welcome to the square. If you post a picture we might be able help figuring out the year. Since it has points it will be 1986 or 1985. Good luck with the horse. BOWTIE Edited August 12, 2013 by BOWTIE
tunahead72 2,546 #6 Posted August 13, 2013 For manuals, you'll find most (if not all) of what you need here on RedSquare. If you have a printer hooked up to your computer, you can download from here and print. For "real" hard copies, check the Toro and Kohler web sites. In addition to free downloads, they also have some printed copies available for sale. And depending on where "The Barn" is (that's a question ), you may find it fun to visit the big Wheel Horse show in Pennsylvania next June, several vendors there with manuals available. Or try one of our vendors here, or put a want ad in the Classifieds.
psychocontractorguy 12 #8 Posted August 14, 2013 Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I'm still trying to figure out the image editing software so I can make my pics small enough to post, but should have some up soon. Thanks for all the info. I'm on the hunt for a clevis hitch, so if anyone has one for sale, I'm interested. "The barn" is in sw Missouri, fyi. :-)
Tankman 3,523 #9 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) Welcome to the forums! You may be able to use a sleeve hitch with an adapter. Of course, a clevis hitch would be ideal. You can these items pretty quick on eBay. Your location is The Barn, mine too! Bank barn, lots of updates making it livable. Try the manual sections here or in the Yahoo Groups. Love the groups, maintained and have most all you might ever need; http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/wheelhorsetractormanuals/?yguid=533503226 Edited August 14, 2013 by Tankman
psychocontractorguy 12 #10 Posted August 16, 2013 Having a rough time locating a clevis hitch, but it looks simple enough to make (we're get 'r done people). Does anyone have a photo or diagram of the linkage between the the hitch and the raise-lower lever?
psychocontractorguy 12 #11 Posted August 16, 2013 And there's a picture of the tractor in question....finally.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,495 #12 Posted August 16, 2013 Post all the numbers including the serial number off the engine's data decal. Sometimes the tractor's model number can be determined from them. Garry
