captainownage01 0 #1 Posted August 11, 2013 Im in the process of fixing up a 1973 8 hp 4 speed and while taking the engine apart, I found that my pully would not come off of the shaft. I did remove the hex key screws from the pulley. I tried two jaw pullers and both failed. Is there anything im missing or is it just that the pulley is stuck after 40 years of use? Any help would be awesome.
bean 85 #2 Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) I assume you have removed the pto and related components and are down to the 4" ,v-belt, drive pulley? a triple jaw puller should do the trick. I've not had any problem with that pulley. it is usually the flywheel that will give you headaches. there is always the chance the pulley has turned on the shaft and the keyways are mis-aligned, causing the shaftkey to lock them together.. can you see if that is the case Edited August 11, 2013 by bean
captainownage01 0 #3 Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) I used a harmonic balancer puller on the flywheel and it came off cleanly without a hitch. I used a five ton triple jaw puller and a 2 ton puller on the pulley and it did not work (the pully bent and broke at one point). Im going to try the harmonic balancer puller again with smaller bolts to get it. Also, liquid wrench and time should help. Thanks for the advice. bean 85 #4 Posted August 12, 2013 I have had good luck using an impact wrench on the puller bolt. just start low and increase the pressure until it gives. the repeated impacts from the gun do wonders.
