bean 85 #1 Posted August 10, 2013 (edited) its been a while since I have had a pto apart. I know it starts with the drive pulley, then a sleeve? then the disc, and so on. here's my question. will a pto from a kohler fit this briggs shaft? if it was 1" the entire length, I would say yes, but it is stepped down from 1-1/8 to 1". there is only 2-3/4" of 1" shaft. is there enough there to make it work? oh yeah, the 1-1/8" portion of the shaft has no keyway, just the 1" I know I would have to fab a top mount for the pto hoop, Edited August 10, 2013 by bean
Don1977 605 #2 Posted August 10, 2013 The PTO from a 8 HP Kolher will fit, but the 1" offset is going the cause big problems with mount the engine and getting the drive pulley line up. The short answer is it's not going to work. That's the best answer I can give not knowing what you are mounting it on.
bean 85 #3 Posted August 10, 2013 (edited) I can fab a custom plate to mount the engine. I measured and can get the pulley alignment figured out. I just wanted to make sure there was enough shaft to make the 8hp pto work. going on a b80. similar to pic Edited August 10, 2013 by bean
Don1977 605 #4 Posted August 10, 2013 I have a 2 25/32" shaft on my 18 hp Vanguard with a wheel Horse manual clutch. The Briggs engines on wheel horses had a thrust bearing behind the clutch because the engine bearings can not take the side force of the manual clutch. The Vanguard has a ball bearing on the PTO side to take care of the side force It may get into the hood moving the engine over 1" .
bean 85 #5 Posted August 10, 2013 (edited) Don, this particular engine has ball bearings on both sides, if I'm not mistaken. these 70s/early 80s engines are popular with cart builders. they build the 5hp engines into 20hp+, 8-9000 rpm screamers.
