Charlie Smith 142 #1 Posted August 6, 2013 Hello When I got my raider 10 I got these weights with it, this was a year ago now, I just don't know where or what they would be used for for, quite confusing, I don't think there wheel horse original, there's no markings on them
Jrblanke 918 #2 Posted August 6, 2013 They look home made to me. The handles on the top look like pieces of a coil spring from a car. Perhaps they were set into a weight box.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,170 #3 Posted August 6, 2013 Were they installed on the tractor when you got it? I cant figure out just where they would mount. You could make the worlds heaviest wind chime tho! Mike.......
Charlie Smith 142 #4 Posted August 6, 2013 Yes I agree on the home made part, what they are made of is completely over my head.....and where they would have gone I was thinking maybe they go on the part of my raider that over hangs out the front. (see below) This is my raider with the pulley cover/nudge plate on it, This is it with the cover off, maybe they hooked on the front here
Dual Drive Horse 6 #5 Posted August 6, 2013 If it had the tiller fitted in the past, I have found it makes them too light on the front and difficult to turn, so assume this was an attempt to cure it.
groundhog47 347 #6 Posted August 6, 2013 Charlie, they look to be of some babit type metal... or are they steel. Could they be BITS from a hammer mill? Is the loop cast on or welded onto the weight? Maybe they were gate counterweights for a self closing gate and some one recycled them.
Tankman 3,523 #7 Posted August 7, 2013 Definitely something homemade! Looks like they were used on the front, as you noted. I used an assortment of front weights when plowing my garden years ago. Definitely need front weight when using rear implements. Now I wonder, "Why didn't I save those window sash weights? Darn!" Using bolts and auto brake drums made a few rear wheel weights sometime ago. Worked great.

I wonder if series land rover drums would fit inside a rear rim...
Charlie Smith 142 #9 Posted August 7, 2013 I think it's safe to say there homemade as all the coil bits at the top are odd shapes and sizes, what they are made from/reused from is above me aha, and I just tried them on the front bracket they fit perfectly so I guess they may have been made to fit on there, and I'm liking that brake drums weights idea, real nice... Lane Ranger 11,410 #10 Posted August 7, 2013 Looks like a welder or blacksmith job on the weights! Car or truck coil spring cut to fit rectangle weights that fit in the front mule drive ! Practical and useful just like all Wheel Horse tractors! Don't forget Cecil Pond and the boys at Wheel Horse thought a lot of this stuff up just like the customers started doing after they bought these garden tractors!
