On a B80 axle or spindles?

Recommended Posts

skrusins

Does anyone have had experience or knowledge about the front axle or spindles wear.

I have a 1976 B-80 8-Speed Tractor, 61-08K803, that seems to have the same slop

between the axle and spindles in both front wheels.

Does anyone think the axle would wear before the spindle? Is there a fix?

Thanks in advance

Friend Bill pacer sleeved the bore on axel but left not very "meaty" remainder. Have heard/read where someone welded and turned spindle.

Either way need a specialized machine or a machinist. Pricy to fair finds on ebay for replacements, just research your parts good as not all look alikes are alike. Members/vendors here would be an excellent source for replacement parts, either contact direct (vendors section) or place classified, best to ya!

Front axel: 5638-01 used on 311 models 70-83

Left spindle: 115425 (old 5631) models 71-77

Right spindle: 115426 (old 5630) models 71-77

I repaired my axles by using a self-centering 7/8" reamer in a hand-held drill. After reaming the holes out to 7/8", I inserted 3/4" ID x 7/8" OD bronze bushings. That tightened things up real nice.

As with many things -- "it depends" On the 1054 spindle assy that Gerry (groundhog) is talking about the axle portion was pristine but the spindle was badly worn, but I have a D-180 that the axle is worn and the spindle is good. Along with the type bearing that was used on the particular model, the attention to greasing both are big factors.

Taking yours off and doing an inspection is probably the only way to determine - either way, wear on spindle or axle can be a problem to correct. Ideal solution is to find replacements (which is getting harder and harder)
