Kohler M16 exhaust daft question

Recommended Posts

Stigian

Just working out the exhaust on my GT 14 with the M16 engine and wondered whould I cause any problems by reversing the gas flow through the exhaust?

Basicly connecting it backwards.

Any thoughts or words of wisdom on this strange idea?

When i worked at a place called Hot Knots Racing in the mid 90's

we built many types of race engines. On the circle track engines we used to run 3 inch pipe off the manifolds

or headers and after a few full power pulls on the dyno we could see the point where the exhaust pipe stopped turning blue.

anywhere past that point the heat and back pressure in the exhaust were not giving you any performance benefits ,so we would cut the pipes and go to bigger pipes to exit the vehicle. certainly not your situation but all the same principles apply. The heat and back pressure in the exhaust need to be used to your benefit. Just by looking at the OUTSIDE of that muffler i would guess your probably fine.

you have a longer pipe going into the muffler so it MAY control the flame front coming out of the engine better .

It most certainly would be better than the screw in or pepper pot mufflers that alot of people that dont know or care use. :twocents-02cents:

Thanks Kato, I will give the exhaust mod's a try and see what happens..

The reasons for wanting to use the muffler backwards is to get it as far away as I can from the GT''s plastic fuel tank (don't want it melting) and as I plan to use the GT for grass cutting I couldn't use a stack and need the muffler to run alongside the hood, kinda 312 style but outside the hood not just under it.
