Coil for my K161

Recommended Posts

rdonner

Hi there,

I am new to this forum. I live in Finland, and have a WH702 that my mother bought as new back in the days. it has been in the family since and been used as a garden tractor. The engine is the K161 model 28701E. 10 years ago the coil went bad (or thats what we think) and we switched to battery fed ignition. I would like to restore the original electrics. The problem is I can't find the coil as replacement part, it seems the E version of the motor is not a common one. All the coils I've found on Internet is of different shape and design. This one is a Bendix coil.

Can anyone tell me, is it worth trying to find one that's working? Sticking to the battery solution works but is a bit inconvenient since I have to be keeping sure that the battery has juice.

Would be grateful for any help; hint or guidance.

The parts list comes up at

http://www.partstree.com/parts/

Type Kohler in the 2nd box and K161-28701 in the 3rd box.

When you get to the coil page there is a note saying to use coil 230075 on models with "F" sufix or earlier. It is no longer available from Kohler.

What are the dimentions of the steel core? I have a Briggs & Stratton coil that I saved but it is no good but could get the dimensions off of it. The B&S number is 290880 and aftermarket replacements are still available.

I think it may be on the last page of this file but the numbers don't match. Has me guessing now if they are different.

This page is from an old Standard Motor Products catalog that have supplied the North American market with auto electrical parts for years.

Hi Garry,

The dimension of the steel core are (in millimeters), length 80.9 and width/breadth 9.6. The casing is 51.5 in length and 37 in diameter. Hope You can figure that out in Inches.

If B&S coil could replace this it would be great, it's so much easier to get a part from Europe than overseas.
