416-8 Onan Trouble

Recommended Posts

dennist

All stickers are gone, so I do not know year. It is an Onan P216G engine. It seemed to run bad like lack of power after disengaging pto, then not wanting to start acted like too rich with black smoke...

Checked compression hot....90 psi both

Cleaned carb...

Changed plugs....

New fuel filter, pump, and lines, cleaned tank...

Started back up, but surging badly

Cleaned carb again..

Used new intake gaskets...

Checked for intake seal leak....No difference with starting fluid spray around gasket

While there, I adjusted valves.... off a little

Started and ran smooth for roughly 20 min. started running rough again, even with pto engaged or not..black smoke and loss of power again

Replaced coil, wires and condenser with spare from running 520

Started and ran fine for about 15-20 mins mowing, then black smoke, loss of power and will not start(it does turn over, but lots of black smoke)I did notice the oil light flashing, but the oil was fine before started and still fine....

Let it sit and starts back up fine and runs smooth till 10-20 mins and repeats???

I do not have much hair left after this one, Any ideas on what I am missing, oil sending unit, temp sending unit, electrical issue?

Check the intake manifold , thay are made in 2 pieces and sometimes come apart. Mine did on the 520

Had the manifold in my hand several times, How do I tell if these have come apart other then visual inspection and spray around with starting fluid to see if the rpms increase when spraying, as I did and found no difference? Thanks

Thay are put together with silicone and small rivets. A visual inspection should be fine. some of the rivets may have come out.

Yeah, that must not be the problem then.

check ignition module when tractor cuts out it tells you how to do it in the onan manual. but it sounds like the ignition module breaking down when tractor gets hot

Ok, I thought if the ignition module was bad, it would not run at all. I will look at that in the manual. Thanks

I see that you are new here.

If you need help, provide the information on what you have and what has been tried.

I'm thinking with this statement that its carburetor trouble - ignition problems unlikely to cause that. While I've got the older B43, the carb on that thing is picky/sensitive as all get out, and flooding is one of its favorite things to do.

I've had the same problem with my 416-H (Onan). I periodically spray brake cleaner down the throat of the carb until it floods out. Then restart and it works fine for awhile. Then I do it all over again. So I purchased a new carburetor (Chinese) and it's been sitting on the shelf now for at least three years. As a result, the old carb is working fine. :scratchead:

My guess is the needle and seat are bad and not sealing properly, allowing the carb to flood.  Clean the seat and change the needle.  Not sure if you can buy just the needle.  You may have to order a rebuild kit.

This thread is from 2013 and has been revived by a new poster.  Lets give him a chance to add information so we can help with his particular issue.
