help identifying a k series

Recommended Posts

bean

I picked up a pull start, k series service engine, and have little info to go on.  most of the tag is missing,   I was able to scrub enough to make out the serial number.

6269816

looking at the chart, it looks like it was manufactured in 1974.   would that  make it a k181?   were there k161s produced that late?

not much to go on.

carb number

41 053 32    also no help, that carb was used on both 7&8 hp.

it has the thinner air filter. 1'1/4" 1-3/8", which is the replacement for the k161

.

I don't know if pics will help. if they will, let me know.

it appears to be a k161, solely based on the air cleaner.  the carb that is on it, was used on both the k181 and k161.   without the id plate, there is really no way to tell.   the shaft is only 3" x 1",  and not 3-1/4"x1" which has me thinking k161. it has been interesting research. it may come down to removing the head, to be 100% certain.

after discovering the engine had a stuck intake valve, I removed the head. it is a 7hp k161.

it seems, the previous owner let the engine sit outside for a while.  the tank was in great shape, so I assumed it had been out of the weather.  unfortunately, the carb was full of water. I had checked the engine oil, and it was clean. it may have been changed before selling.

it has a bad coil/magneto, so I am not sure if I am going to go any further with it. if the crank case had water in it for a while, it may be asking for trouble. it does turn over easily.

on the plus side, the tank is perfect, and the cylinder shows very little wear. no ridge at all. I think this was installed on an air compressor, probably on a service vehicle.

I managedt to strip a few parts and repaint between rain and honey-do list

my 7hp looks like it is dead. :crying-yellow:  I can shine a light into the cylinder and see it getting egg shaped at the bottom, while turning the crank. the head had a pretty thick black deposit on it. probably smoking pretty good, when running.

I have some good bits and pieces off of it. I would like to use the recoil parts to make a 70s k181 electric/recoil start
