Brownta 5 #1 Posted July 17, 2013 Hello all, I have got a hold of a C-175. It ran fine for a couple weeks and then just quit all the sudden while mowing. This tractor has had the engine replaced at some point with a Kohler 14hp. The guy said he had to file the points down a lot to get it to run. To me the points do not look all that bad. Right now when the key is turned over, nothing happens. If I fuggle with the back of the switch and pinch it just right the engine will turn over but not start. Could this be an issue with the ignition switch that is keeping it from running? Or is it more likely the points/coil issue or some other electrical issue and my messing with the back of the switch is just shorting something out to make it turn over? Any thoughts on the issue would be helpful. Also which ignition switch should be in this tractor? It looks as if there are 5 and 4 pin switches on the market. Thank you in advance! Jeff-C175 7,206 #2 Posted July 17, 2013 Could definitely be an issue with the switch. Your machine originally used the (common) 103990 switch, and probably still does, it has 5 terminals, but who knows what they did with the wiring when they swapped the engine out... Why isn't this in "Electrical" ?
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #3 Posted July 18, 2013 The switch is a weak point on these tractors. Make sure you replace it with one exactly like the one you take off. Pay attention to the letter codes on the back of the switch. If you don't have alot of experience with this I recommend you ask someone to help you who does have experience. Have them show you where the power goes as the contacts make on the switch itself. This could save you from frying something that you can't eat! Its good learning, and if you stay involved with this hobby you will need to know how these things work.
