cityjack 1 #1 Posted July 17, 2013 Morning all, I am new to this forum but not my Wheelhorse. I've had it for about 10 years now and it runs very well. Except for it not charging just recently. I do have the owners manual and I do own a vot meter as well. I did at one time see a thread on how to troubleshoot my charging system. However after searching, I cannot find it now. Something about a certain amount of rpmsw and at that rpm a certain AC voltage out of the stator, and then a dc voltage of a certain amount out of the regulator and then check at the battery for the same amount. I need the particulars though please. Question also please, I have the schematic, does the charging voltage for the battery go back through the ignition switch? So is it possible that my regulator could be good but the switcch is bad not letting the battery charge? The switch works fine to start the tractor though. Thank you all Sid
Jeff-C175 7,206 #2 Posted July 17, 2013 Hi Sid, I just replaced my regulator AND ignition switch, see: At 3600 RPM, you should have about 35 - 40 VAC on the two 'outside' terminals of the regulator. The center terminal of the regulator is the DC out, referenced to ground. I think the Kohler manual says anything over 30 VAC on the input AC terminals is 'OK'. Mine dropped down to about 18VAC at idle, which is OK. You should see the same DC voltage referenced to ground at the regulator center terminal as you see from the battery. cityjack 1 #3 Posted July 17, 2013 Yo Jeff, Thanks for the reply. I did see where you tore your regulator apart too on another thread. New Jersey huh? Born and raised here and now down south. Where in Jersey?

Jeff-C175 7,206 #6 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) Me too... born in Rahway... but IN the prison... ha ha ... j/k ... I'm about 15 miles southeast of your old stomps... I had some distant relatives that were from the Lefferts Clan, at one time (4-5 generations back) it was a very large family in this area. You weren't around there when the shark came up the creek and et them kids, were you? No, I'm sure that was before yer time! ... Peter Benchley's inspiration for "JAWS" came from that incident. cityjack 1 #7 Posted July 18, 2013 Thats funny man. I do remember hearing about that though. 15 miles south huh? What are you talking Marlboro? Middletown? Freehold? Jackson? Done'em all. Never heard that Jaws thing though. The Lefferts Clan? Didn't know the lake I learned to swim in had a clan named after them. Ain't been back to Jersey in like 20 years I think. Left there after I graduated from college and then moved to Richmond and been all around ever since. I'm gonna take a stab at his regulator tomorrow after work. I see you play the banjo. I just sold my farm in the Bluegrass capital of SWVA a few months ago. Your missin out. Have a good night. Sid
