Maine Tractor 3 #1 Posted July 15, 2013 Hi everyone. I picked up my first wheel horse nut roaster today. I don't know much about wheel horses and stumbled on this site in my research. I was told the tractor is either a 61 or 62. It has the curved front axel. I think its a suburban? it has a 4hp kohler k91. If anyone has any info that would be great. I will post up some pictures when I can figure out how. Thank you.
Maine Tractor 3 #2 Posted July 15, 2013 Had to resize so the picture might look a little weird.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,171 #4 Posted July 15, 2013 The hood decal makes me think its a 1961...probably a 401. I'm not good at getting my round-hood years right so hopefully someone else will chime in. Mike............

546cowboy 302 #6 Posted July 15, 2013 (edited) That's a nice looking Massey too. I had one of those and got rid of it. That Tecumseh ignition coil was way to expensive. That is a very nice Horse you got there. Is that original paint? Edited July 15, 2013 by 546cowboy
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #7 Posted July 15, 2013 Nice suburban! That is a 1961 551. It looks to have had a kohler swapped into it at some point. The 551 was the only mid engine to have the two piece transmission.
Maine Tractor 3 #8 Posted July 15, 2013 Thank you for the info. What would be different about the original motor? Any advantage/disadvantage to having a two peice transmission?
MaineDad 87 #9 Posted July 15, 2013 Welcome Maine Tractor! That's a nice looking Wheel Horse. There's a few of here in Maine if you need any help. I'm over in New Gloucester... Micah
Ken B 3,189 #10 Posted July 15, 2013 The two piece tranny is beefier and less prone to axle leaks. Nice score.
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #11 Posted July 15, 2013 As ken said. The two piece transmission is better design than the older 3 piece. The motors are changed a lot. The original engine was a lauson h55, but they are hard to find. If it were mine I would just keep the kohler on it and enjoy it. Jake

Maine Tractor 3 #19 Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) Thanks again everyone for all the response's. I finally got some time to play and check out the tractor. I took the carb off, checked the oil and adjusted the points on the motor and she started right up. Next I pulled the plug on the transmission and a bunch of water poured out at me. The boot on the shifter is ripped and almost gone, would this be how it would have gotten in? Also what do I do now? My thought was to pull the drain plug and completely drain the transmission, fill it back up, run it around a little bit, drain and fill it again. Anyone got any other thoughts on this? Also what should I use for transmission fluid? Edited July 18, 2013 by Maine Tractor
Digger 66 3,488 #20 Posted July 18, 2013 I would stick a blow gun in the fill hole with a rag wrapped around it to form sort of a seal & with the drain plug out blow the heck out of it .
