Trouble draining Oil in a 522xi with Kohler Command 22 HP

Recommended Posts

I have the manuals and I am not new to this process but I am having trouble figuring out how to open the drain plug located below and toward the rear of the oil filter. And once the plug is opened, how do I catch the oil?

This "new to me" unit has a loader mounted - do I have to remove it?

Is there a special tool to get at the plug?

Sure seems to be limited room in there.

Also looks like the previous owner has rigged a ground wire to the plug.

Is there any magic way to get at this plug so I can drain the oil and change the filter.

Any insight appreciated.

Bob

Can't help with the 'magic', but I wonder if the 'ground wire' is actually a 'tether' to keep from losing the plug?

Hmm. Did you think about replacing the drain plug with a 90 degree elbow and a spigot. That is what my 518xi has on it. Very easy to drain oil. No mess, no fuss.

Mine has one of those " no tools needed" drain valves on the right hand side of the engine.

A little more crawling around and I discovered a 90 degree fitting with an easily removed plug on the right had side of the engine.  The WH manual only showed a drain plug on the left side below the oil filter.  I got my hands on a manual for the Kohler Command and discovered there are two drains - one on each side.

Thanks for your help folks.
