K-341 Exhaust -- Constricted?

Recommended Posts

Picked up my first K341 on a C-160 at the show.  I noticed that there is a reducing bushing in the exhaust port on the block.  At first I figured it was work of some previous owner trying to save money on a muffler.  Looked it up and found that the K341s came from WH that way.  I guess to allow them to use the smaller piped muffler also used on C120 and others.  I was always told that exhaust restriction is a bad thing, reduced power/efficiency, hotter exhaust valves etc. Was this a matter of cost vs good engineering???  Would it be worth it to try a different muffler that would mate up to the larger exhaust port on the K341??

I guess a lot of K341s have soldiered on for many years with this restricted setup so maybe I am over reacting.

I would say it probably doesn't add that much of an issue - 2 stroke engines need back pressure, 4 stroke engine don't.

By restricting the output it may be beneficial to valve lifetime or controlling torque/HP...but that's just guessing

the exhaust itself is a restriction - but that's designed to silence the sound...
