Running hot -show find

This is something that's been bugging me, personally I've never seen it before. Dad and I were at the big show picking up our parts etc and on the way out with my new $10 rims, we stopped to put them down on the grass where I could pick them up with the truck. there was a gentleman there selling I think it was a lot of (2) tractors, one of these tractors he was telling a potential buyer was completely rebuilt.......this particular tractor had the canister type exhaust that exited on the left side .

The paint was completely burned off the hood , black , from heat in the front where the canister muffler was mounted, top to bottom.

What caused this to get that hot and how would it affect your decision to to buy or not ?  I know enough about engines to stay out of trouble but this had me scratching my head .......too lean ?

Sounds like something I did on an older restore. I had an extra c series muffler which I really liked and it fit pretty well on my 312 but was too hot. I wrapped it with header tape and when I sold it told the buyer that he needed to change the muffler or it will burn the new paint.
