510racer 0 #1 Posted June 29, 2013 I am the proud recipient of a 1988 310-8. However, I am having some problems getting it to run. I cannot get to crank or run unless I bypass the starter switch by using a remote starter button. My gut feeling is it's one of the safety switches but I am not sure what order to test them as they seem interconnected. What voltage should I be reading? 12V? How would I test the relay? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #2 Posted June 29, 2013 Wiring diagram From the ignition switch to one half of the pto switch to the clutch switch and then the low oil relay. A low oil condition opens the low oil relay which prevents the voltage from getting to the starter solenoid. If you unplug the low oil switch that should leave the oil relay contacts closed so the power can get to the solenoid. The clutch switch is activated by the drive belt idler arm. Pull the cover off that surrounds the shift levers to get to it. The voltage should be what ever you measure across the battery posts. Garry
953 nut 59,310 #3 Posted June 29, 2013 If you place a jumper from the small wire on the starter solinoid to the battery wire and it cranks over then the solinoid and battery cables are good. Then you can start looking at safety switches. Make sure the PTO that runs the mower is pulled back and you are on the seat too. These will all stop it from cranking along with oil level. Good luck and keep us posted.
510racer 0 #4 Posted June 30, 2013 I did, in fact, jump the small wire on the solenoid. That's the only way I could get it to run. Although I was not in the seat nor did I have the clutch pedal pushed down if that helps. I have the wiring diagram but the wire colors don't seem to jive. Most of the wires appear black although some have stripes. The oil level is fine. It doesn't appear one can unplug the oil sensor but I'll check again,
510racer 0 #5 Posted June 30, 2013 There does not appear to be any way to unplug the oil sensor without unplugging the whole engine harness. Would the oil test switch/light being nonfunctional make any difference?
510racer 0 #6 Posted June 30, 2013 I believe I've narrowed it down to the PTO switch. If I remove the two lower leads - not the ones with the one piece connector - and jump the leads cranks right up. If I understand correctly this switch keeps it from starting unless the PTO is disengaged. Is there any good, resonable source for these parts. Thanks Again!
