DoctorHfuhruhurr 137 #4 Posted June 24, 2013 hmmm, that's a tough one. I personally would try to get it for $800-$1000 (or less if possible) or preferably let the seller throw out the first number. I rarely if ever see them for sale so my pricing is just a guess. I'm sure others will chime in.
Rollerman 290 #5 Posted June 24, 2013 Derek if the potential seller knows what it is, or has an idea how desirable they are...he may be stubborn on the price. I gave $1000 when I bought mine from a family friend about 10 years ago in running condition with two implements, later sold it to another collector. When I bought my Lever Steers the seller agreed on a price ($100) for the pair, but then raised it before I could get a trailer around & pick them up after learning of there collector value. I'm not sure how many RS-83/Seniors are out there to be discovered yet. Chances are slim you will come across another shot at one, so I'd be ready to throw down some coin & save it. The Wisconsin engines can still be found at swap meets for parts or to replace. Miller tire has 16" tires that are very close to the originals. That's a very savable tractor, even the frame if you could come up with a bell housing. Good luck!
Wheel Horse Kid 105 #6 Posted June 24, 2013 No clue on value of that one, but I have seen restored/nice originals for $2500-$3,500 or so. Hope you are able to get it for a good price! That is a true treasure for sure. Would LOVE to have one those some day!!!! By the way, does the seller know that it is a very collectable tractor or is he oblivious to it's value? BPjunk 184 #7 Posted June 24, 2013 The Senior looks fairly complete although judging by the picture that the hood is damaged (use this fact in your pricing with the seller). Find out if the engine, transmission, steering gear and differential is locked up, all these can be rebuilt but this will expensive. There looks like a plow with the deal and I would look through the rest of the junk pile to see what else might go with the tractor (after you agree on a price). Now to talk price .... feel the seller out .... how did you find this tractor .... by chance ... word of mouth .... does the seller know what this tractor is ..... Take Steves word on not letting anybody else know about this ........ loose lips sink ships and ruin good deals on old Seniors and Pond tractors. (yes Steve I still remember your story) If the seller does not want to price the tractor be fair and firm and offer $700.00 SHOW CASH IN HAND WHEN DOING THIS (yes this tractor needs work) and let the seller counter offer .... if they scoff at this price show the faults and reoffer higher ...... to part this tractor out would make some money but you have to find the person who needs the parts. The top price (and remember your capabilities to restore this type of tractor) I would say $1,800.00 ........ only if the tractor is complete and every is free moving. stevebo-(Moderator) 8,535 #8 Posted June 25, 2013 IMO it looks like the seller does not put a high value on it based on the fact that is is setting outside uncovered for who knows how long. I agree that you may never come across another one. To part it out would be a sin in my opinion. As others have said the motors are still around and pop up on ebay once in a while. If you are able to get it for $1500-$2000 range you could always resell it and not lose a dime. That tractor needs to go to one of us collectors and not set outside to rust. I would expect that you have at least 5-10 pm's from members here who want it if you buy it and decide to sell it. Go get em tiger !!
fireman 1,022 #9 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) RUN don't walk! Go with a hand full of cash and a trailer. Don't show your cards and make sure you hide your excitement. If the owner knows what it is he will want top dollar. If he has no idea you may get it for a few hundred dollars maybe less. You have kind of let the cat out of the bag. You list your location in your profile and you can be sure other collectors in your area are looking around and asking questions. This is a dog eat dog cut throat hobby when comes to the holly grail of Wheel Horse/Pond tractors and someone will grab that out from under you in the blink of an eye. Close the deal as soon as possible and don't let anyone talk you out of it. There were only approximately 550 of them made and there's two of them right there!!! I would bring about $2000 just to be sure. Edited June 26, 2013 by fireman
