Yesterday while mowing the PTO just stopped working. I used a volt meter to test the black and white wire that goes to the PTO and had nothing. I checked the switch and it seemed to be working properly. There are 3 relays under the dash and only the one that goes to the solenoid had power. There was nothing at the other 2. Can anybody tell me what the other 2 relays are for?

Here is a good set of wiring diagrams.

Also listed for the 1992-93 models

Garry thanks so much for the reply. I am in the process of trying to find the problem. Just a quick question. When testing for current with a volt meter should the key switch be in the on position? While I was testing the relays the only one that had power to it was the starting relay and nothing at the 2 others. Also ther was no power to the clutch coil with the switch off.

If you look at the single page with the whole wiring diagram they show the status of the ignition switch in each position. When OFF the only terminals connected are G and M (ground and magneto)

Yes the ignition switch needs to be at RUN or START to power any circuits.

The start relay will have power to it but won't do anything until the key is in the Start position and the safety switches are closed.

Warning - do not allow any battery voltage into the M wire. It will cook the ignition.

You've checked the fuses, right?  Particularly the 15A shown in the unit schematic (page 12) for the PTO clutch?  This fuse also powers the headlights... do they work?

The relays are not part of the PTO circuit.

Put your multimeter negative on a good ground, systematically go through that schematic.

Maybe easiest to work 'backwards', so with key on, PTO switch ON,

Check for 12V at the GRAY wire from the PTO switch to the clutch.

YES?  Bad clutch coil.

NO? Check PINK wire from PTO switch to 15A fuse.

YES? Bad PTO switch.

NO? Check ORANGE wire from fuse to ignition switch terminal L.

YES? Bad fuse.

The ignition switch itself can't be the problem because if it was bad or intermittent at the L terminal, the tractor would not start or run.

All along the way as you work through it, look for loose connections or burnt wires.

Jeff it looks like it is a bad PTO switch after following your directions. I have 12 volts at the pink wire on the pto switch but how do I check for voltage from the switch to the 15amp fuse

oooppps   spoke to soon. I have no power on the pink wire of the PTO switch but I have 12 volts at the fuse

You have 12V at the pink wire coming from the fuse, but not at the other end of the wire where it attaches to the switch?

Sounds like you need to start looking for a break in that pink wire then!  Try and follow the pink wire from the PTO switch back and look for broken/cut wire.

First, make sure you have 12V on BOTH sides of the fuse.  If the fuse is blown, you will still have 12V on one side of it (the ORANGE wire will have 12V even if the fuse is blown, but the PINK will NOT)

Did you check to see if the headlights work or not?  They run off the same fuse.
