Another rookie question 417A

Recommended Posts

Have a WheelHorse 417 A that was running as of last week.  Brand new battery as of April.  Today, won't start-no sound, no click, nothing.  Any thoughts as to the source of the trouble???? Much appreciated as I am totally in the dark about such things. Thanks in advance!!!!

Sounds like a dead battery. Also check your battery terminals to see if they are corroded.

Make sure the PTO that runs the mower is off/not in the mowing position. If the unit will not crank over with jumpers from a good battery you may want to try taking a jumper from the good battery directly to the starter; that will take all other components out of the program. If the starter will turn over then move the jumper back one connection to the solinoid outlet and so on until you don't get any cranking, that will tell you what is bad.

Hope this helps.

When you say 'nothing' do you mean that when you turn the ignition on the hourmeter doesn't start ticking, the voltmeter doesn't move off zero - if so then the battery has gone flat or there's a connection come off or corroded on the power line , or a fuse has blown.

It these work but when you turn the key to turn the engine over there's nothing then either a wire has come off or a connection is corroded or one of the safety switches (clutch, pto etc) isn't closing to complete the ciruit or the relay (if fitted) has given up..

Best guess based on similar tractors though no experience of a 417.

If the battery is good, then it is always my luck that one of the safety switches has stopped working.

What is the model number and serial number of your tractor? The wiring changed in 1986 with the introduction of the low oil switch.

Now I see you have just an oil light. The wiring in this manual may work
