47JDG 65 #1 Posted June 14, 2013 I came across a nice deal today on this stuff that was too good to pass up. The tractor is a Commando 800, it seems to be a tight low hour machine that has just sat in a barn forever. It needs a rear tire and few other small tinkering things. I also got the tiller and blower with it as well. They belonged to a different C series tractor he used to have. I will probably keep the blower to use on my C-81 since it has low range. I already have a tiller so I may just sell this one. It needs the rear guard shroud cover plate, its the only thing missing that I can see. I am curious how common the 20 x 8.00 x 10 rear tires are to find? They are smaller than what is used on most garden tractors. They look like a standard lawn tractor size that you would find on a Craftsman or other vertical shaft mowing tractor. I would like to just find a good used one for now so I can get this thing up and running on the cheap and use it. Anyone have much experience with a Commando 800? Any tricks or advice? Thanks! CasualObserver 3,411 #9 Posted June 15, 2013 Jason...that round hood that the tiller is leaning against looks to be the round hood in his profile picture. Ah... I merely assumed that the photos were taken at the seller's place due to the 2xx series JD in the background. Should have realized from his user name that he's a green fan as well. 47JDG 65 #11 Posted June 15, 2013 Juss10 - I live about 30 miles east of Grand Rapids. I know they put the smaller wheels and tires on the Commando's so the mowing deck would clear the tires. At least that is what I have read, and it does make sense. Will the mowing deck in fact work with the standard size (larger) wheels and tires? This is mainly going to be a mowing tractor. I like the cut the 36" RD decks give and thought this would be a pretty simple and economical tractor for mowing. I guess I could swap some 12 inch wheels on the rear and some 8 inch on the front from another one to see. Anyone tried this before on a Commando? Is it doable with the mowing deck? 47JDG 65 #13 Posted June 20, 2013 I got the Commando running today. I am happy to report it runs great and the transmission is nice and quiet also. The motor oil and gear oil that came out of it looked real good so that's a nice sign. I pulled my lawn roller with it for about an hour. I ended up putting a new starter solenoid in it and fixing the poor cobble job someone did to the wiring. One of the terminals had come loose inside the solenoid and I am sure it must have been arcing or no longer working for the previous owner. It looks like that's when they parked this tractor in the barn and gave up on it. Now I just need to get the mowing deck up to snuff and it looks like I will have a nice little mowing tractor. I am impressed with the tight turning radius this tractor has and I think it will be a great tractor for mowing around things. I think I will just keep the stock wheels. It seems to get a long fine and is comfortable enough.
