Tom. 70 #1 Posted June 14, 2013 Hi all, I'm pretty new to these kohlers so have limited knowledge of them but at the minute I have both a K181 and K321 in bits! The problem with the k321 is that is bellows out smoke so I got the head off and found some slop in the piston however I also found in the valve stem part there was around 1" of oil in the bottom, is there meant to be? I notice there is oil coming up the exhaust valve and not the inlet valve. I can tell this because when you turn it over it comes up, also the exhaust is full of oil. Is there an explanation for this?? I am going to order some piston rings but I want to know if there is anything else I should order at the same time for the valves, I'm not sure if they have valve seals or not. Will I need a whole new valve? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tom
WH nut 553 #2 Posted June 14, 2013 Sounds like your valve guides are worn out. How much slop do you feel you should be able to feel any.
MalMac 1,332 #3 Posted June 14, 2013 Agreed, check valve guides also valve stem for wear or chaffing. Also there is a drain back hole up where your valve springs are. Check to make sure the hole is clear of any obstructions so the oil can drain back in to the oil sump. Also check your crankcase breather to make sure it's installed right and clear of debris and function ok.
