leeave96 490 #1 Posted June 13, 2013 I've got a Kohler Magnum M8 - 8 hp engine and there is a breather hose that routes from the breather to the air cleaner. This engine has a pancake muffler and the heat from it must be intense! The hose is melted! Here is a couple of pics: Anyone had this problem? What does your breather look like where it vents? Thanks! Bill
tombones49 3 #2 Posted June 13, 2013 I had the same problem but not on a Kohler engine. To solve the problem I used fuel hose. It was able to withstand the heat. My next option, if the hose didn't work, was to put a "heat shield" between the muffler and the hose. Make the shield from a tin can. Give that a try.
Jeff-C175 7,206 #3 Posted June 14, 2013 Is it possible that you've got some leakage past your exhaust valve?
JamesBe1 84 #4 Posted June 14, 2013 I've never seen a hose melt like that before. Usually they char and smoke and catch fire. This is almost like it liquified and resolidified.
MarkPalmer 81 #5 Posted June 14, 2013 I have seen this many times. It doesn't usually indicate any problem with the engine. The rubber just deteriorates over time with the crankcase gasses passing through the hose. If you replace the hose, it should be OK for another X amount of years until it rots out again. -Mark-
Fordiesel69 271 #6 Posted June 14, 2013 Essentially the material it is made out of is simply decomposing. Agreed there is nothing wrong as to "why" it failed. Assume the engine was new old stock still in the box, that rubber would already be on its way south regardless of use. I had a brand new echo leaf blower still in the box from 1972 and the fuel lines, air filter foam, and rubber connector for the air tube were literally ready to crumble.
