I got to get it running still but looks like a solid old tractor. Only getting spark to one plug so far.

Since both plugs fire simultaneously, you've either got a bad wire, or bad coil... my money is on a bad wire.

I've heard the Harley D coils are a cheaper substitute than stock and work just fine.

I might have read that here?

This one is chrome...

By the way, for reference, the primary of the Kohler coil is about 4.25 ohms, at least mine is anyway, so this coil would work fine.

Jeff, no only 1 plug has spark which is the one closest to the coil. Which I haven't checked the coil yet but I'm guessing its the problem.

Thanks

Yeah...I've seen them in pic's before but not in person. Seems to be in great shape that I can see so far, just getting her to fire up would be nice. PO said it ran good but did smoke some. Oh well maybe a over haul later or I might swap engines with a single 16hp I have sitting around. That would look different.

Swap the plug wires at the coil.  If the 'no spark' moves to the other, you know it's the coil.  If it stays on the same cyl, you know it's the wire.

But then, maybe even a bad plug?

I did that 16 single swap to one a couple years ago. I think it was better than the 17 I had in another one.

Bo, I might should have phrased my statement a little bit differently.

What I should have said was:

Since both plugs are supposed to fire simultaneously...

This is called a 'wasted spark' design.  While one cylinder is on the compression (firing) stroke, the other is on it's exhaust stroke. BOTH plugs fire at the same time.  One lights the incoming air/fuel charge, while the other one fires into an exhausting cylinder... thus the 'wasted spark'.

This is why for diagnosis purposes you can swap the two plug wires at the coil in order to easily narrow the problem down.

Also the KT17 I heard is a long lasting engine in stationary use, such as a generator.  However in the tractors, any angle you operate the engine at can snap a connecting rod.  So unless you mow flat, use a different tractor for that job.  My friend has a mint c175 hyrdo with a rod sticking thru it for mowing sideways.

Agreed...  mine is a 1980 and still runs great (can you hear me knocking wood?) but both myself and the previous owner have always used it on a flat piece.  I have one strip along a drainage swale that I won't do with the tractor because of the angle.

Yeah I have a few grades here and a ditch line. I have my other C175 auto and I do all grades except the ditch line. I run the oil just a little above the full line just for that reason. I dont know but so far so good.

You should also try swapping the wires at the coil.   As jeff said they fire at eh same time...one is wasted on the exhaust stroke.  If that changes the cylinder with no spark then it is the  coil...but I am with Jeff.. plug wire or plug itself...

Well I got the old gal running. Coil ended up being good, the plug wires, condensor, points, all good! All I did was sand the contacts on the points and sanded the plug wire ends that fit up in the coil and replaced the plugs with the ones I took out of my other C175. I didn't even recheck for spark other than at the points. Just hooked it all up, shot some starter fluid in the carb and it fired up faily quick. Didn't have nothing to lose at that point.

Now the problem lies deeper in the engine. I went to change the black oil out, before I tried running it much over 1/2 throttle, and took the drain plug off but nothing came out, it was plugged up. So I reamed it out with a coat hanger wire to get some flow going and there it went! But what I found in the cap I was afraid of, and yes it was tiny pieces of metal. So we know thats not good.

I went ahead and changed the oil and fired up to run it out in the yard to check tranny out. (which runs out great in all gears) but the engine has a bad vibration. I went ahead and reved full throttle and rode around the yard but the more I ran the more the vibration got. Plus it would sputter and smoke bad if you rev up too fast or put it on any strain like going up grade. Have to back it off till it smooths out then I can slowly rev it back up but at this point vibration is so bad I couldnt keep my teeth from chattering. So it starts real easy and idles like a champ but now I guess I have to pop the top and see whats up! Which is not my area of expertise.

Any thoughts throw em out!
