Wheel Horse Kid 105 #1 Posted June 8, 2013 Hi, I have a nice little B-80 (it is the shorter frame one) with a 36" mower deck that I got at an auction a couple of months ago. It is a nice little tractor and looks like it was well taken of, however, the 8 HP Kohler engine in it is blown... I thought that instead of rebuilding the engine or putting another 8 hp Kohler in it, I am thinking about putting a diesel in it (Like a Carroll Stream 6 or 10 hp). Yes, I know it would be the more expensive route to go, but I think it would be a really cool conversion to do. With that being said, I have a couple of questions about this conversion and was wondering if someone could help answer them: First, has anyone ever done a diesel conversion in either a B80 or another similar tractor? If so, how did you like it and how difficult was the conversion? Second, what modifications would need to be made to be able to fit the diesel in the B80 (Mounting holes, wiring, PTO modifications to run the deck, etc)? I am thinking the B80 is tall enough and wide enough for the diesel, so there should not be any problems there. Thirdly, what is the shaft size for the B80? The shaft size for the diesel is 1 inch. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Taylor
WH nut 553 #2 Posted June 8, 2013 Im pretty sure the shaft on the 8hp is a 1 inch also. Now as far as you other questions, you will have to pull a spec sheet for both motors and compare. Im not familiar with the diesel you are talking about but Im sure you can gather all the info.wiring same thing, You most likely wont use most of the original harness. Sounds like a fun project though.
Don1977 605 #3 Posted June 8, 2013 You might want to look at ( a1biofuel ) they have the 6 and 10 HP diesels. The 10 HP is only 1.7 inches taller then the 6 HP and only $30 differrence in price. I think some one on the board made an adapter for the diesel air breather to keep from cutting the hood. http://www.a1biofuel.net/

fireman 1,022 #5 Posted June 8, 2013 (edited) Check out my thread here on Red Square about putting a diesel engine in a Lawn Ranger. It should be some help and give you an idea of what it takes to do it. Edited June 8, 2013 by fireman
Wheel Horse Kid 105 #6 Posted June 9, 2013 Thanks for sharing the link fireman! It was very informative! I am leaning towards doing the conversion, just not sure if I want to spend the $500-$600 for the motor yet... May not sound like a lot of money to some, but it is for a 17 year old! LOL! I will probably end up doing it as I have wanted to put a diesel in a Wheel Horse for awhile now, but I am still going to need to think it over some more. By the way, your diesel Lawn Ranger looks awesome fireman! What beautiful craftsmanship!
fireman 1,022 #7 Posted June 9, 2013 Check out Craig's List and Ebay. I paid $400 for my engine and it had only been run for a few minutes. Someone on Ebay sells the 6 horse power china diesel engine for like $459.00 with free shipping.
