MalMac 1,332 #1 Posted June 7, 2013 I have got a K-321 that I just rebuilt and it has got me stumped as to the way it's starting. When the tractor is cold I put the choke on and the second I even turn the key it fires right up. Then I have to take the choke off and it wants to die then I put the choke back on then wants to die. Then back off again. It takes a good 1 to 2 min. of up and down with the choke then it levels off with out any choke and runs strong without missing a beat. I can shut if off let it set for 7 to 9hrs and it will fire right up without messing with the choke or if I do there is no problem just pull the choke off and it's fine. Let the thing sit overnight and you go to start it and have to mess with choke on choke off again for a couple of mins. Don't think its loosing any prime because it fires right off. Wondering if I have got a float problem.
WH nut 553 #2 Posted June 7, 2013 Sounds like it just needs the carb adjusted
Fordiesel69 271 #3 Posted June 7, 2013 Download the K-series service manual and review carb section. There are some holes in the choke plate that kohler made larger to avoid over choking. The truth is, if you ease the choke off very slowly after it starts, you will find a sweet spot. Usually most engines will require a tad of choke for 30 sec or so. I have a few that need choke and one K241s that never needs choke. If you still find you have to work the choke on and off, then you have a fuel delivery problem or a low float setting. SousaKerry 503 #4 Posted June 7, 2013 may be a fuel pump issue also
MarkPalmer 81 #5 Posted June 7, 2013 Mine tend to work like Fordiesel69's, they start right up cold with full choke, then need the choke closed about a 1/4 of the way for 30 seconds or so until taking it off all the way. -Mark-
