1961 551 tractor I just got

Recommended Posts

I just got a 1961 551 tractor, it looks like it was the electric start and someone converted it to a manual, there is no wiring harness, there is still a voltage regulator on the frame but nothing hooked to it. the choke cable is not there and not sure what the other cable was. How big of a deal would it be to bring back the electric start? It's my next project.

Does it still have the starter on it? Is it still a Tecumseh H55D-2113 5.5 ? Are the diodes still on the tractor? It isn't all that difficult to put electric start on one but it can be another story to make it original.

I hope you didn't buy that one one in Flint with no hood and well almost all the parts missing and rusted fast.  The one that has been on Craig's List for like 2 years...

I bought a Lawn Ranger from that guy and almost wish I didn't...   Never buy a tractor that is half buried in weeds and snow. :hide:

For the electric start you need a starter and the proper flywheel.  If you want it to charge the battery then you will need a bunch more parts that are pretty hard to get, but I may have most of hat you need.  Take your flywheel off and post some pictures of what you find.  I just did this to a HH-60 recently and went through heck getting all the right parts so I have a few extras left over.

No does not have a starter on it, it does have a voltage regulator on it no wiring whatsoever on the tractor also no throttle cable or choke cable. No battery cables does have a coil on it with connectors on it but no wiring. I got the tractor for free from a guy down in Lafayette Indiana. I went down there with a friend to pick it up. here is the numbers off the flywheel cover.  H50-65403S  SER9191R

Well the big thing is does the flywheel have starter teeth on it and under the flywheel is the correct stator still in place? Also check that the magnets inside the flywheel are in good shape.

Does the engine have an external coil or is it under the flywheel. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
