'88 wheel horse starter issues

Recommended Posts

androidguy21

I'm having trouble getting my '88 wheel horse to start. The starter is getting power but only makes a grinding noise. It seems as if it's all seized up or something. I'll be able to look at it in a couple days. Any thoughts or experience to offer?

:WRS: Sounds like a weak battery or possibly bad starter.

Yeah the battery is fine. Is it possible that the starter has mis-worn and is now seizing up?

Is it grinding, or just whirring... I have had trouble with the gear getting bound up on the bendix when some crud or moisture gets in there. I assume this is a magnum? If you take off the blower housing you can see what is going on. Mine got stuck after a long day of snowblowing this winter (snow flying everywhere, I assume some got up in there...) Wiped it off and some graphite powder lube and it works great.

Ditto the above. The "grinding" may be the starter gear drive only making partial contact with the flywheel gear ring, usually caused by a gunked up bendix. As dsholler suggests, try cleaning and lubing it to see if that solves your problem. If not, check back with us and we'll toss out some more ideas!

Ok so I tore into the old thing yesterday and today. Found it's problem was internal. I took the cylinder heads off and found that only one cylinder was firing. There's either a broken crank or connecting rod. Does anyone have a clue if they sell the parts for the '88 2 cylinder onan engine? If so how much are they?

I have a WH 300 series with a Kohler Magnum 10 engine and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the choke cable and linkage set so it will work. The numbers on the engine label  are worn off the, so I cannot give anyone that information. Does anyone have a picture or can you head me in the right direction.

My arm for the linkage assembly is set at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock if that helps. There seems to be several different linkage rods for this engine.

      Thanks

I have my 25A fuse blowing every time I put a new one in the slot. The old one was burnt up when I got the tractor put this year. It sat for a year with a dead battery. I stopped using it as much because the transmission is clattering pretty bad when taking off on second or higher. I had to replace the clutch belt a few years ago and couldn't get an OEM. Not sure what is the problem there that's another issue though.

I have checked the wiring and patched the worn spots where it could be grounding out. The fuse blows as soon as there is power to the system with the ignition off. I'm at a loss of what to check for at this point. Any input from someone who has had this issue would be appreciated. I'm not sure what these units are in the photos but do not know how to test them for a failure. They are directly in loop with the battery and the ignition loom looks to run into that 25A fuse.

      Hey all!

Replacing the drive belt on my 252-h. Anyone know the torque specification for the center screw when I put this pto clutch back on? I know it was on there tight it took a minute for the impact to break it loose. Thanks!
