dakotawing 0 #1 Posted May 25, 2013 Decided to put engine back on frame instead of trying to run on bench. Coil primary is 3.5, secondary is 17.8. As stated earlier post both cyls. above 125 comp. Turns over good by key. When turned over by hand the voltage stays at 12.76 instead of pulseing to 1 volt & that is with new ignition module. Also has new condenser, trigger wheel, plugs and wires, Can someone tell me where to go from here? Thank you in advance!!!!!!!!!!
GMan 82 #2 Posted May 29, 2013 Long shot but make sure your condenser is connected to the plus (+) side of the coil as opposed to the minus (-) side as is required on the "B" Series Onans with the point system............Hope this helps.
dakotawing 0 #3 Posted May 29, 2013 Thank you Gman. The condenser is on the plus post. From the test I have done (if I done them right) is saying that the IGNITION MODULE is bad. I put it on new last winter and still could not get any fire so stopped messing with it till now. The wire ends on the new module would only fit one side of the coil cause as you know one post is larger that the other. I have no clue as to why I can get no spark. Either the module was bad or somehow I screwed it up someway I guess.. Guess I will try another one and then that is it for this engine with me. Thanks again for the come back. GMan 82 #4 Posted May 30, 2013 Another thing I thought about is the plastic rotor housing the magnets to fire the Module can be installed backwards. It is marked "flywheel side" but I have heard of guys getting it turned to the wrong side.................Don't mean to doubt your ability here, just thinking out loud like I would do searching out a problem of my own! GMan 82 #5 Posted May 30, 2013 Just thought of a couple more things! There is an insulating gasket that must go between the Module and where it mounts to the engine block. It is imperative that it be in place so check that out too. Also I had one that the long weird looking woodruff key that keeps the plastic rotor in time with the needs of the engine and also serves to key the flywheel slipped during the flywheel install shearing the key and allowing the plastic Rotor to rotate on the crankshaft causing the engine to be far enough out of time it would not fire. Unfortunately you will have to pull the flywheel again to check out all three of these situations..................But don't give up the ship! You will love that Onan once you hear it bark! dakotawing 0 #6 Posted June 2, 2013 Well GMan, I got another new module to try but have had too large of a honey do list to get to the onan yet. I have had the flywheel off several times. I will check all that you mentioned but I am pretty sure the trigger wheel is with the flywheel side out towards the flywheel. I know the condenser is on the pos. post of coil. The black insulator is between the module and the block cause I got one of them new also and installed it. Will get to this in the next couple days Thanks again!!!! dakotawing 0 #7 Posted June 19, 2013 Well guys, I got this engine running after installing another new ignition module and the first time turning over it had spark. So installed/hooked up everything and what do you know. About two revs and it was purring. Drove it around the yard and down to some other property a few blocks away and pulled a 8X10 trailer with it. This ran for about five or six days. Purred like a new born kitten. Put deck on it and a belt that was not really tight enough but would be alright for a test run (used belt). Belt broke after about 10 minutes of mowing. Drove back to garage, as entering garage there is about a 1 1/2 inch bump. Hit the bump in 2nd gear and it was like I shut the key of. Have tried four five times, check the wireing, and this thing will not spark even a little bit at the plugs. It turns over very good. I'm giving up on this thing and thank you all for the past information.
Save Old Iron 1,571 #8 Posted June 19, 2013 Rotten luck old chap. You do still have the knowledge to get it going again. Start with measuring voltage on the coil and make sure you have your 12v to 1v transistions. I'm guessing either the belt smacked some wiring out of place or you have another corroded connection on the igntion switch or the 9 pin engine harness connector. Don't discount coincidence from the mix. It is possible the battery went dead at the time you hit the bump. Check the charge voltage to the battery and don't forget to check your battery cables. Battery cables are hefty enough to bounce and loosen on the terminals if the terminal bolts are not tightened properly.
