Lagersolut 743 #1 Posted May 19, 2013 Hi everyone Yep, another newbie , I'm getting ready to start a project on my C-101 this year , this tractor served my father ( from new ) mowing 3 acres for 15 years , in '94 it was handed to me and it's been servicing my needs ( mowing, plowing the 1/4 acre garden , pushing snow , pulling wagons ) since ...problem free . It's time for some TLC , the left axle seal is seaping oil ( didn't check for up and down play yet ..), moter runs good but smokes after it's hot and idles , I'm looking to tear into this with motor work, paint , decals etc and get her all pretty and leak free again, I'm going to need resorces and guidance ....I'm in the research phase of this now .....tractor has a 8 speed manual transmission . 1) Any opinions on the moter rebuild kits on E-bay 2) What are the tricks to getting 34 years of oil and grease off parts for a quality paint job and no fish eyes . ( the sheet metel I'm planing on farming out for sand blasting ) 3) Worst case scenario I have a bad bearing on the left axle, what skill level and tools are needed to fix this , I've done crank seals, head gaskets , short blocks etc to other motors, but never any tranny work so I'm nervous if the case needs split and also what else should be done while it is ? 4) A decent restoration with 90% of the work done by me ......what's an estimate what I'll get into this ? Thanks for any input , this tractor simply amazed me, the work it has performed , problem free , for 34 years ( 1 engine rebiuld in there ) is second to nothing . My blood runs Wheel Horse red and always will . '79- C-101 '75 -C-120 '89 -310-8 '05- Classic -GT

Lagersolut 743 #5 Posted May 19, 2013 Thanks , I live 45 minutes /1 hour from the Arendtsville fair grounds, never been to the show and only found out about it last year when I stopped to talk to a guy with a 520 complete with hydrolic bucket who ended up having 6 more 520's in his garage ( we're all the same lol ) and he filled me in .... I'm hoping to possibly buy another horse . Marked on calander

pfrederi 18,703 #7 Posted May 20, 2013 The leaking seal is an easy fix (getting the hub off is the hard part). Search here for several threads on hub removal. Some in and out movement of the axle is normal. What you do not want to feel is any up/down -- forward/ back movement. If she is tight in those direction you are good. If you are not so lucky check the transmission section and how too for several good threads on the topic. Getting in deep enough to replace the outer needle bearing is not a task to be afraid of.
