315-8 blowing fuses

Recommended Posts

I was sitting on my 2002 315-8 thinking about changing the oil when the engine simply stopped. When I tried to restart the tractor, there was no response by the starter.  I thought about it for a moment and thought that hey, I bet I just blew a fuse.  I checked, and sure enough one of my 10 Amp fuses was blown.  So I went down to the local NAPA and purchased a combo fuse pack because, after all, who needs 10 of the same kind of fuse.  So confident in my diagnosis and cocky that I solved the problem, I changed the fuse and started to mow the grass.  I didn’t make it around the perimeter of the yard before the fuse blew again. I moved the other 10 amp fuse in place of the one that was blown to try to quickly drive back to the garage.  It blew again and I ended up pushing the tractor the last few feet.

A review of the operator’s manual indicated that I blew the F3 fuse for the safety system.

I am at least the third owner of this machine so I don’t know much about its history.  Somebody bypassed the seat safety switch by putting the wires together.  Although I am no fan of bypassing safety switches, I don’t think this is where the short is coming from because the wires were put together well and taped. Who knows???

Any help on even where to begin searching for the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ihad the same problem two weeks ago with blown fuses. It turned out to be the wires coming out of the bottom of the fuse block. They started rubbing up against the drive belt and wore clean thru to the wire. Two wires touched and-----a blown fuse.

I removed the fuse box last night.  There was a lot of silt in the box, but all the wires appeared to be intact.  It's probably a good place to start following the circuit.  I'm going to take my time trying to resolve this issue.  At this point, the tractor will need to sit till next week.

Thanks
