starter does not engage when I turn key

hi. I have an older model wheel horse riding mower. I think it's from around 1990-1995. when I turn the key it goes whirrrrr. a couple times it has started after I rolled the mower a few feet. battery is practically new. seems like starter is not engaging. I'm not very mechanical so any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you, mike

take a screw driver and see if you can push the starter drive towards the motor. Sometimes the get stuck. If that works spray some card cleaner on the shaft and lube with a dry lube

thank you for the tip wh nut. my stepson came by and took stater cover off. plastic gear on starter is worn out. he's looking for a replacement now. I appreciate the advice.

Must be a briggs, Tractor supply has them about 8 bucks
