How mowing can destroy your ONAN

Recommended Posts

Torino

I mowed with may c175 other day and notice that there was no clippings on the screen because it turns.  Why in the world did WH let this go on so long and did not change it?  Is there a mowing screen behind the plastic screen?  If not how hard would it be to put one on?

Jackc has a good idea and it looks like you could make a metal one pretty easy.

I came up with a solution and now I all I need to do is paint it red and sell copies.  I was mowing with my 520HC and 48 inch SD deck.  When I was mowing with my 416-8 at the start of this thread I notice the clippings flying out from the front of the deck and getting sucked up into the flywheel screen.  Same thing was happening with my 520HC.  I had to clean the screen about every 5 minutes.  So I took a piece of cardboard and some bungee cords and came up with a simple baffle to block the clippings from getting sucked up into the flywheel screen.  It worked great.  After a half hour of mowing there was hardly anything stuck to the screen.  Now all I have to do is paint it red put a wheel horse sticker on and get rich selling copies.   Maybe I will apply for a patent also.  Maybe someone can come up with something better?  Here is my solution.

Looks pretty expensive to build.  I'll start saving my pennies now!

Jarkc,

I had this issue with my 520 as well. Check the throtle cable clamp just before the gov springs. Mine had came just loose enough to allow the cable to move ever so slightly. Once I reset it and tightned it down good, it doesn't rev up high anymore. Just a thought.

good info!

not sure if the failure of Onans can all be linked to a plugged screen as rear cylinder valve seat failure is secondary to clogged cooling head fins(or solar flares)....but, keeping old Mr Onan cool and clipping free is a must!! :D
