Riverbend 0 #1 Posted May 18, 2013 Stupid question and any help appreciated. Is the V Idler pulley next to the Flat idler pulley suppposed to turn? Clutch will not turn when engaged and belt is tight but will engage as usual and spin if belts are loose or off. My V idler pulley will not spin but the Flat idler spins--Is it seized? Thanks--this is driving me nuts.
rmaynard 16,326 #2 Posted May 18, 2013 I am assuming that you are referring to the idlers in the mule drive that direct the belt to the mower deck. The answer is both are supposed to spin freely.
Riverbend 0 #3 Posted May 18, 2013 Thanks rmaynard--I know what I have to do today. It is the two in front that drive the deck and the flat idler pulley spins freely but th V idler next to it is froze up.
pacer 3,177 #4 Posted May 18, 2013 FWIW -- was recently reworking my 'mule drive' and the same pulley on it was frozen (the V one) and on trying to find a replacement bearing found they seem to be completely discontinued, unless there might be some old stock running around. Anyway, there is a workaround. The bearing is 3/8" dia in the center and that is what is so odd, there are plenty of the OD sizes but with larger IDs. What I found from reading here, and other places, is to get a bearing with the correct OD and with an ID of, say 5/8", and put a 3/8" bushing in it. I found a bearing in my spares drawer with - IIRC - 17mm ID and I turned up a bushing to bring it down to the needed 3/8" on my lathe, worked great.

For a 7451 with a real ball bearing get a Napa 7-05485. This is for the transmission drive belt.

Wheelhorsedairyfarmer 13 #11 Posted May 26, 2013 Dumb rookie question, but figured I'd ask, is there a way to replace the bearings in the idler pulleys?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,500 #12 Posted May 26, 2013 The V-idler for the front mule is Toro part number 104974 replaced by 92-7103. A Stens replacement is 280-743. These have a 3/4" bore. stevo4g 1 #13 Posted June 4, 2013 (edited) I think this could possibly help out. I have a new flat idler and have the numbers off of the bearing. I would think it should be the same size as the v idler, at least the ID would have to be. The numbers on the bearing are PAC 6203 3/4" RS JAPAN. Hope this can help out.
