Identify this GT-1800

Thanks for a great resource.

I need help finding the actual model number for this tractor, and importantly the deck.  I have found no serial number, model number, any identifying tags on this thing.

I have experience with lawn tractors, but this is my first Wheel Horse, so it's a new ocean to me.

The deck needs a bearing, and I have no clue how to hook up the attachment lift, so its in float mode.  The transaxle should be serviced I'm sure, since I've only changed filters for the year I've had it, but have no clue what model to get manuals for procedure.  The engine is tired, compression is low, but not so low that it's unreliable.  I have to change the oil very often due to blow by contamination.  A rebuild will come soon, I'm sure.  I seem to be missing a couple of guards, the adjustment pully on the front, and the whole side cover that runs the hydro.  I've been pleased in the one cutting season that I've used it.  I'm not a twice a week mower, and my grass is... well it looks nice from a distance!  So it's not having a hard life.  It does soak up grease like a sponge!  Seems like it would love to be greased at every use!

I got it in trade for junk from an older guy who was pissed that the toro dealer was going to charge him some huge amount to service it.  I stopped by the dealer for a part for my simplicity on the way to the scrap yard.  He came out and commented on the motorcycle I was junking, we got to talking, and ended up swapping trailers, unloading and swapping back.  All it needed was a magneto and a new pto clutch, the mag I had, the clutch I got from ebay.  (looked right, was wheel horse, I got lucky).

So, if you guys and gals can help me figure out what it is so I can quit quessing at how to care for it, I promise to keep it in good shape.  (wiring digram would be just AWESOME, did these really only have one safety switch?)

If its a GT-1800 its a 1984 and Jeff gave you the correct model#.

If its a 1983 its model# D1-184801 and was called a GT-1848.

If its a 1982 its model# A1-184801 and was once again called a GT-1848.

Your deck is wrong for that tractor. Looks like a gear drive deck from the 60's and thats why it wont hook up correctly (and probably never will). From the factory that machine came with a 48" side discharge deck.

I second the wrong deck comment, that deck looks like it may be narrower than the tires as well.

Is that the correct color?  I thought all the "GT" series were silver  :confusion-questionmarks:

thanks all! the sticker o. the Hood says GT-1800, but is barely legible. I'm certain it does not say 1848.

the deck is a gear drive center discharge. I could tell it didn't fit perfectly, but I'm shocked its 20 years older than the tractor! it works pretty slick besides the hydro lift. any idea where I should start for a model number for it?

thanks so much, you've all been very helpful.

the deck is just slightly wider than the tires. the cut is right about tire width. kinda sucks for edging but functional otherwise. Would the gear drive require more or less torque from the motor than a belt drive?

Jeff: thanks! the link is going to have to wait until I get home, the script crashes my phone.

It must be a 36" deck. The gear drive decks were used on the 6-8hp models so your 18hp shouldn't even know its there.

I have a GT-1800 as well! Congratulations! That tractor sure is a strong running machine with some proper maintenance. I got mine with a loud engine knock from most likely carbon buildup on top of the piston. I will have to pull the heads soon before I put it to work. I am impressed with how strong the hydro is in the GT-1800. Are you planning a full restore someday?

I don't know about a full restore.  But I'll be happy keeping it from getting any worse.  I don't mind keeping old steel sharp, but I haven't the patience to make old steel new again.

Did anyone have a model number for the deck that I may start looking for part numbers?  This one still has to be fixed.

Be careful before you order an engine kit.  Back in that time frame briggs had some twins without cast iron sleeves.  If this is the case, the engine is not worth rebuilding, but rather running till its dead.

I have a similar deck, they came in 32" and I beleive 36".  I was not aware of a 42" deck that was gear driven.  The 18HP came factory with a 48" side discharge as I still have the manual for my GT-1642 which shows the deck sizes.

another good day mowing with this machine. I do like it. if anyone in the area would like to trade this deck for the proper one, I would think about it. I really like the rear discharge...

Forddiesel: if you have the proper deck model numbers, I would be grateful.

If it is an 1848 it has an Eaton 1100 hydro in it which is the same as a 520H. I had an 1848 I sold in January. It was a nice tractor and the engine ran good. Here are a couple of before and after pics.

Any attach-a-matic 42" or 48" will fit.  So most from the 80's and 90's.  With the 18HP, I personally would go right to the 48".  Once you do, you won't want to go back to the 42".
