wheelhorsin1974 6 #1 Posted May 16, 2013 When im mowing, my tractor with a kohler command 14 seems like it may not be running fast enough. How do i know if the rpms are where they should be and if someone may have messed with it. Maybe im just used my 2012 cub cadet reving much higher. I know they are more of a "chugging" engine but still seems slow running. Any advice??
Kevbo 81 #2 Posted May 16, 2013 I just looked into getting a laser tachometer off Amazon to measure the RPMs. See link below: http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-20713A-Professional-Non-Contact-Measurement/dp/B000I5LDVC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368670383&sr=8-1&keywords=laser+tachometer+rpm
thehorse 221 #3 Posted May 16, 2013 Great question. My 314 seems a little low also.
wheelhorsin1974 6 #4 Posted May 16, 2013 Cool. What is the max rpms supposed to be i wonder??
thehorse 221 #5 Posted May 16, 2013 Just a guess.....maybe 3500 to operate and cool properly. Mine is a 2001 with I guess a command.
wheelhorsin1974 6 #6 Posted May 16, 2013 Hoping one of the wheel horse brains chime in here for some advise. Come on guys. Lol
thehorse 221 #7 Posted May 16, 2013 I'm probably wrong but think I read once that top rpm should be 3600 and should run at 3500. I will check out the answers from someone unlike myself that know there a-- from a hole in the ground. Any idea how you will measure yours?
wheelhorsin1974 6 #8 Posted May 16, 2013 Nope. I dont think ur wrong. I just read that too. Ur right on.
leeave96 490 #9 Posted May 16, 2013 3600 RPM's is the correct speed.
wheelhorsin1974 6 #10 Posted May 16, 2013 Is that not to exceed that max speed or is that the constant speed the engine should run at?
Kevbo 81 #11 Posted May 16, 2013 I believe 3600 RPM is the constant speed the engine should run. Now correct me if I am wrong but the RPMs can be adjusted by the carb? Or do you adjust the governor?
wheelhorsin1974 6 #12 Posted May 16, 2013 I believe u adjust at the carb. Not totally sure either.
dsholler 54 #13 Posted May 16, 2013 Governor is for top rpm, although it will not get to full speed without enough fuel, so carb could also contribute. Carb controls idle speed. Did you check throttle cable adjustment? That is where I would start.
WH nut 553 #14 Posted May 16, 2013 This is what I use to check RPM, its cheap and you can use it on anything. You can even use it to diag vibrations. They are only about 12-14 bucks http://www.treysit.com/16.html
wheelhorsin1974 6 #15 Posted May 16, 2013 Thank u very much WH nut. Ill be getting one of those. Appreciate the info.
BOWTIE 226 #16 Posted May 17, 2013 THE OVERHEAD VALVE MOTORS DON'T SOUND THE SAME AT FULL THROTTLE. I DON'T KNOW IF IT'B THE OHV DESIGN OR THE MUFFLER. I HAVE HAD 1999 314-8 AND A 2002 315-8 AND THEY SOUNDED LOW BUT THEY WERE CORRECT. BOWTIE

My Dad has a Simplicity with a Kohler Command twin in it and it sounds like it's running about 3/4 throttle, but it's full out. Next to this tractor, the Onan REALLY sounds good... chazm 413 #18 Posted May 17, 2013 Have same problem with my 314-8, Had no throttle responce from 1/2 to full & didn't sound like it was at full rpm. I change the spring setting from the cable to the gov. Now have higher rpms ,but need to check rpms with a tach. Chasm
