jimt1971 237 #1 Posted May 16, 2013 Hi, I am working on a 701 with the original Kohler. The engine runs ok for about 2-3 minutes then the engine starts to sputter very bad then I can only keep it running by pulling ut the choke. But here is the weird thing. The carb get very hot to the point you could burn your hand removing it from the tractor. Any ideas? Thanks, Jim
Fordiesel69 271 #2 Posted May 16, 2013 Are you getting any spit back from the intake port? Is the intake passage in the block plugged solid with debris?
WH nut 553 #3 Posted May 16, 2013 Is all the tin on the motor, blower housing and side tins?
Save Old Iron 1,571 #4 Posted May 16, 2013 no carb gasket present to insulate the carb body from the block ?
jimt1971 237 #5 Posted May 16, 2013 Getting blow back when it sputters. All tins present. And I do have the carb gasket. Could it be a lazy exhaust valve?
rmaynard 16,363 #6 Posted May 16, 2013 Did you check your valve gaps? Sounds to me like a possibility that the intake valve is not closing all the way when the engine gets hot.
Anglo Traction 761 #7 Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Hmm, that's a challenge. If your carb cooks only after only 3 mins running from cold, then the old school days principles of Heat transfer being Conduction, Convection and Radiation will enter the scene. I reckon it's the heat level that makes the engine splutter to a halt due to vapour lock. The cause of the heat may well be Valve(s) as mentioned,....or unless you've already checked, it could also be leaky Muffler joint, Head Gasket leak directing hot gasses onto your Carb. Fordiesel69 271 #8 Posted May 16, 2013 May be a cam problem as well. My K301 carb did indeed get quite warm as a result of the cam lobes being bad.
