Wheelhorse Identification Assistance Request

Recommended Posts

eibbed

Hi guys,

I purchased what I believe to be a mid engine wheelhorse today. It has what looks like the original 6HP Tecumseh SR # 3192R H60 75335J. It has a round nose, no lights, and the ignition key is on top of the hood. From the little information that I have given you, do you know what it is?

Did you look in the photo gallery to try and match it up with something there?

Look at the 1960 550 or the 1961 551 models.

The original engines for both of those tractors were 5.5hp Lausons, so the H-60 Tecumseh is a newer replacement.

Thanks TT,

I think it is a 1961 551. It's still on the trailer. I'll take a closer look at her tomorrow. Is a 551 a suburban or a round nose or is it simply a 551?

They are technically a 551 Suburban.

Most people refer to these models as "nut-roasters" or "ball-burners", but I prefer to call them mid-engined Wheel Horses.

The name Ride-away Junior, or RJ was used until 1959. In 1960, the suburban homeowner was targeted more diligently by Wheel Horse.

The 1960 400/550, and the 1961 401/551/701 tractors are all technically Suburbans.

Wheel Horse also advertised the '62 models as Suburban tractors.
