nekovt 0 #1 Posted May 13, 2013 Hello, I just posted on another topic asking about possibly replacing a flywheel for a 518-H / Onan engine. The engine vibrates so much it broke the "Steering hub" (The joiner below that battery that joins the steering shaft to the bottom of the steering column). I'm looking to see if I can get the new Steering hub part and also maybe either "rebalance" the flywheel so the engine doesn't vibrate so much or get a new one. Has anyone seen this or know of where I can these parts? Thanks! Brad
WH nut 553 #2 Posted May 14, 2013 18HP Onan should be smooth as glass, you have something serious going on. Make sure you are running on both cylinders. Then start disconnecting anything that it drives to eleminate any outside sourse. The flywheel should never have to be balanced. Even if the magnets come loose it should be that bad. Tankman 3,523 #3 Posted May 14, 2013 Ouch! You've got much BIGGER problems than something out of balance. I wouldn't run the engine at all until you, or someone in the know, looks at the Onan. Whole lot of shakin' goin' on!
bitten 134 #4 Posted May 14, 2013 I have an extra set of steering parts but that sounds like the least of your problem right now. I dont know much about the Onen but know that if it shakes that bad that you are breaking things that is not a good thing. You can P.M. about the steering parts if you would like. nekovt 0 #5 Posted May 14, 2013 Hi, Thanks - I talked to someone who said that the vibrations wouldn't be enough to break this steering part. It must have been cracked when I got the tractor a few years ago. I was able to find the part and get it ordered. For the shaking, it's more a super vibration. I de-carboned the engine 25 hours ago and it runs exactly as it did before. I'll check to make sure that both cylinders are running. What's funny is that the engine sounds smooth. It just vibrates the tractor. My 520-8 doesn't vibrate much at all and both of them are onan engines. The other thing I've got to figure out is why this engine threw a lot of oil in to the air filter area, smoked for a bit then it was fine. It runs fine if I keep it on a level surface. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could check? Thanks!
ericj 1,579 #6 Posted May 14, 2013 just a dumb thought is the engine oil over full ????? eric j
nekovt 0 #7 Posted May 14, 2013 I've checked the oil several times, it's fine. I've always made sure it never was overfull even last year when it started. I've been told it could be a venting problem creating positie pressure - is there some sort of vent valve maybe?
