Fordiesel69 271 #1 Posted May 13, 2013 I forgot Kohler made a 20hp magnum twin. Can these be used in the 520 tractors as suitable replacements? And why did wheel horse opt for the onan over the Kohler?
MarkPalmer 81 #2 Posted May 13, 2013 The all aluminum Onan Performer series developed a good reputation on John Deere's 316 and 318 model tractors, and in turn other manufacturers began using them more mainstream. Deere switched to Onan for the 318 after the mess of problems encountered with the KT17 engine on the 317 model. The Onan Performer engines were less expensive to purchase than respective cast iron cylinder equipped Kohler Magnums, and from a manufacturers standpoint the Onans were just as good, plus Onan had a great reputation for service and support where Kohler had no answer for a while when KT series 1 twins were failing left and right. But... as the test of time goes on, for the true long haul I think the Magnum twins have come out ahead of Onan P series twins. Of course lawn equipment manufacturers don't really care if an engine lasts 30-40 years or not, and they probably rather they didn't. -Mark-
smoreau 658 #3 Posted May 13, 2013 I have a magnum 18 in my 520 and I am very happy with it, You need to drill 2 holes in the right side of the onen mounting plate and they will fit right in. that 20 should be a great repower
